living in country to adopt
Hi all,
I am new to this group. I have been trying to adopt for a couple of years now. I was "paper ready" in Guatemala when our state department strongly urged US citizens not to accept referrals. I then switched to Vietnam and have not received a referral yet and don't expect to by the September 1st deadline. I am wondering if there are any countries out there that I could live in and adopt there and then return to the United States with my child. What is involved? How long must I reside there? Which countries allow this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kim

As far as I can tell, under the new Hague laws you have to be living in the US to be able to adopt internationally. We also live overseas and would love to be able to adopt but I don't think it's an option anymore. If I'm wrong, I would love to have someone correct me but that's my understanding.

Check out adoptions from Mexico. I think you have to live there for 3-6 months in order to adopt.
