To Tell or Not to Tell... (lots of ?'s)
Is it better to leave antidepressant use off homestudy/adoption info. or to choose a country that accepts pap's that are ok w/ the use of these meds?
I am on a daily 75mg dose of effexor prescribed by my family physican for mild anxiety. which countries & or agencies are okay w/ the use of anti-depressants? could anyone who takes antidepressants share info w/ me on their adoption &/or homestudy (which agency, country, homestudy agency (pennsylvania) you used/are using) Has anyone opted to leave this info out alltogether? I would like to be honest and open about my meds but it seems like it is such a road block and if my Dr is ok w/ not reporting it, then that may be the best option for me...(if your Dr doesnt think you are not a danger i.e bipolar, schizo, etc, and capable of raising a child, than is leaving it off better? please tell me your opinions.. please pm (as this is private info) p.s... please don't think I have any ill feelings toward people with the aboved mentioned mental illnesses I do not think at all that anyone w/ these conditions is "defective".. (I am supposing/guessing that there a many parents adoptive/biological who are fantastic and raising wonderful families) in short I have no right to give too much of an opinion on things that i dont know much about, but these to me seem like more serious illnesses, that should be regarded on a homestudy.

Keep in mind that your doctor will be required to complete a medical form and will most likely have to list prescribed medications. If your home study agency finds out that you purposely with held information, I would think it could cause problems.
Personally, I would share this information with the agency and have them counsel you on eligibility.

I have never known an agency to raise eyebrows at this type of diagnosis/medication. If anything, they will feel more at ease knowing that you sought help and received treatment. That is much better than seeing where you were diagnosed and were NOT on medication for it. You know, there aren't too many people left in the world that haven't been on this type of medication at some point (especially those on this forum who have dealth with infertility, miscarriages, and waiting for TPR and adoption process to go through).
I say lay it all out in the open and that will just be one LESS thing to stress about in this whole process. Good luck and let us know how it turns out! Your answer may prompt someone else who has put off treatment to go ahead and get help. Kim

Hi,
One part of any application for international adoption is a health examination form signed by a physician that evaluates your health and explains what meds you are on. I don't think you can ask your physician to "hide" the meds because your MD would be committing perjury. As for countries, I believe that China is out for you, but there are other places. MM |

China will not accept you if you are taking anti-depressants/anti anxiety meds. I'm not sure about other countries.
That being said. If you get caught lying you will fail your homestudy, and many agencys will not accept you if you have failed a homestudy in the past. Can you make it without your meds? Maybe you can quit taking them so you don't have to lie. I have taken lexapro in the past. We were grandfathered in to the China program because this rule came into affect after we were already logged in. To be on the safe side, I did quit taking my meds, w/ my dr's ok. I really have been fine. This is slightly ot- but I believe all the hormones from fertility treatments caused my anxiety. |

If your doctor has known you a long time, he or she will probably be o.k. with not putting down that you're taking any psychiatric-type meds. If not, see whether another doctor will fill out the forms for you (for instance, your OB/GYN instead of your PCP) without mentioning the meds.
I assure you that China, or whichever country you apply to, is not going to send anyone to question your doctor directly -- nor is your agency. You might want to hide the meds during your home visit though just in case you get a really snoopy social worker (unlikely, but better safe than sorry). Good luck! |

Thanks for your replies
I appreciate everyones input, i wanted to add that I would never want my Dr. to out right lie, if there is a direct question regarding the prescribtion of medication than it should be answered. I would not want to put my Dr in any sort of legal/moral trouble whatsoever... I was referring more to a don't ask don't tell mentality.
PerdieCAN ANYONE RECOMMEND ANY COUNTRIES? AGENCIES?
