Will husband's medical condition be a problem?
My husband and I are just starting the adoption process (for international), and I've read that some of the information the agency/social worker will gather is medical information. My husband has a genetic disorder which can be quite serious but in his case is well monitored and manageable. I am starting to worry, though, that someone in the adoption process will be overly concerned about this. (I am trying to get life insurance for him squared away, and those companies are sure a pain about it--I figure if I can get them to understand this, I can get anyone to!)
Do you think I should worry? Has anyone else out there adopted with medical issues in one spouse? Are some countries more concerned about medical history than others? Should I mention it to agencies right away as we decide on one? Thanks for any advice . . . |

I think that what you need to do at this point is to call various adoption agencies and discuss with them the medical problem. They will be able to tell you which countries are better for you with his condition. He will also need to have a doctor write a note stating that he is in good health and has a normal life expectancy, this is done when you are doing your dossier and doing all the medical work. Before that , you should definately call several agencies first and discuss this with them.Good Luck!!

I have an incurable medical condition which causes some intermitent pain and requires me to have surgery from time to time. I also was diagnosed with another disease similar to arthritis. We were up front with the agencies that we were looking into for both domestic and international. It wasn't a problem for us.
Perhaps a letter from a physician might help explain your husband's condition but talking to a person at the adoption agency would probably be a good first choice. Jen
