After the child is a landed immigrant, you can immediately apply for citizenship. It took our boys something like 7 business days once I mailed in the application for them to get their citizenship cards in the mail. It was STARTINGLY fast for us. For my dh on the other hand, it took almost 2 years but for kids, I think, its much, much quicker.

Thanks for your reply. We are in the process of adopting from the Dominican Republic. Waiting on a few last minute paperwork, in the meantime filling out the Immigration Canada sponsorship 'family class' and questioned how long does it actually take when I do travel back with the children, and apply for their citzenship??? how amazing is that 7 business days !! You have made me feel very hopeful! Thanks. Oh and hey ! nice picture 'Jensboys' !

Just remember though that you cant apply for citizenship until you are finalized. I dont know if DR has a 6 month waiting period - or if you have to wait 6 months here in Canada to finalize ... but once they are "legally" yours its REALLY, REALLY quick.

Congrats on a D.R. adoption. Haiti has a big part of my heart, and as such, so does D.R.

What province are you in?

I am from Ontario, and you? apparently I can apply as soon as we are home, which I was hoping to do. and I really was hoping it wouldn't take too long to rec.v citzenship. We are requesting children ages 2 to 6 years old. approx. My husband and I are in our forties and really would prefer not starting at infant stage.!! ha, ha...

Your boys are from Haiti ? How wonderful !

LOL no ... my boys were adopted from Missouri at ages 3 and 4, now ages 11 and 10. BUT originally we were adopting from Haiti but due to political unrest at that time, there were no adoptions proceeding.

I live in BC. It will make it easier for you if finalization occurs in country (as in the D. R.). We had to wait 9 months until we could go back to MO and get a court date to finalize. Once the kids were finalized, and we returned to Canada it was a quick and easy process.

My boys, by the way, are also full biological siblings.

I have heard you have to live in DR for 3 mths before you can adopt? is that true? I just came back from there in the beginning of FEb/06... It was beautiful! It's good also that you would like children a little older, because i have heard it's not possible to adopt a very young child from DR... not sure though, that's what I heard...

How did you go about adopting a child from DR? We are considering adopting a child from DR as well. It is rather daunting! Were you matched with a child from an organization? Which organization did you go with?

We are adopting thru our province at the moment but we would like to adopt internationally from the DR in the next couple years for sure.

We have a plan that we are hoping for!
