Hi! I don't know too much about it... but here's what i've read... i think it's quite difficult, but possible! i think you have to live there for awhile though, and i believe it's very difficult to get a child under 3 yrs... hope this helps, it comes from this site...

http://dominican-republic.adoption.c...n-Republic.jpg

This program is: open

Children available for adoption include boys and girls of all ages, healthy and special needs. They reside in orphanages. In 2001 (last year reported), U.S. citizens adopted approximately 12 children from the Dominican Republic.http://dominican-republic.adoption.c...n-Republic.gif

Travel required: Adopting parents must reside in-country for 90 days or longer.

Singles accepted: Yes; unmarried couples must prove at least 5 years of uninterrupted union.

Other: Once a child is identified for adoption, a caretaker and housing are provided at applicants' expense, until the child is released to adoptive parents.

I can't help you out with any information, though it may be worth pointing out that Haiti, which shares the same island, has a relatively smooth and affordable adoption program.

I agree totally with Bluedaisy... Haiti is a country, very much in need, and is also the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Very very close to DR

Smile Adopting from the Dominican Republic

Hi all!

I am from Ontario, Canada and the DR just opened up for us a little while ago.

The DR has BABIES beginning at 3 months of age, so the pp that said it is hard to get a child under 3 years is mistaken. Possibly, that may have been the case once.

Also, yes, the DR and Haiti share a country, however their cultures, histories and heritage are vastly different. Trust me on this one, I have worked in Haiti every summer for the past 10 years, adn speak fluent Creole. I would adopt from Haiti, however this will be the first child for me, so am looking for a little one closer in appearance to me, and Hispanic meets that criteria.

If you want to adopt from the DR, go for it! The agency I am using is www.kids-link.ca
Now, do know that in addition to a homestudy and all those hoops, a psych assessment (going for mine on MOnday! and cohabitating with your adopted child for 2 months in the DR is mandatory. I am sooooo looking forward to this part!!

My soc wrkr is due here in 20 minutes to go over the draft of my homestudy!! Here we GOOOO!

joval??

Joval, my soc worker just left and she had a glowing homestudy report fro me to check before final typing! She is recommending me for an infant girl as young as possible, of Hispanic colouring, as I want the child to both look somewhat Portuguese and to breastfeed. I ordered my brestpump today and should be "good to go" by the time the referral comes in!

check this link for more DR info on adoption from there. But, again, remember I am in Canada. Where are you???

Wow, I guess they need to update their site then! I wonder why it tends to have been difficult in the past to adopt from DR? Well, i'll sit here hoping that an agency in Quebec will open up! Do you have to reside in country for 90 days though?

You have to live WITH your child for 60 days before he/she can come home with you.

Email Sue at kids link and ask what you can do in Quebec.

Good luck
