Single Mother Adoption
Hi, I am new to this board...but I have a question...do they give single mother's the same assistance as they do traditional families?
I have just sent in my US citizenship paperwork because it is required to adopt internationally. I'm an italian national but never bothered to get the citizenship until now...because I want a child. I never did meet the right guy, but it's not stopping me from sharing my love with a baby. I want this more than anything in the world...I just wonder if the fact that I don't have a husband will work against me? I want to adopt a newborn/infant from Guatemala? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated! ![]() |

no problem
The agency I used worked with so many single Moms in Guatemala. No differential treatment that I heard from anyone. We adopted from Kazakhstan, but my single friend is adopting her second Guatemala babe!

I know of a single mom who now has two adopted children, the girl from Bulgaria, the little boy recently from Guatemala. Another single mom e-friend is about to adopt baby twins from Guatemala! Their singleness was not a factor at all.
Best of luck to you in your journey to motherhood. Marni (PAM - Potential Adoptive Mom) |

SOme countries do not allow singles to adopt, but
others do. You need to become informed about the countries that do allow singles to adopt.
Some U.S. agencies will not work with singles and/or will give preference to couples. I started with an agency that supposedly worked with singles, but found they were more restictive. For example, couples could apply to adopt two children at once, but singles were not allowed to request this option. Singles were required to meet higher financial standards and provide more supporting documentation regarding guardianship plans, day care arrangements, etc. Everyone who adopts internationally agrees on one basic principal. Choose your agency wisely! It is worth the effort to put in the research up front. I adopted two non-related infants simulatenously from Guatemala. They are the love and the joy of my life. Like you I never met Mr. Right, but wasn't willing to forgo the joys of motherhood. Good Luck on your journey. |

Single Mother
Hi,
I am a single mom adopting in LA. As a single parent I had to sign a form saying I was a hetrosexual and another form that is called the male role model addendum that just states who the male role models will be in my son's life. Other than those two additional forms the process seens to be the same as for couples adopting. There were some readings in the Guatemalan court last year regarding changes to the adoption process. One of the changes was that they were no longer going to allow single parent adoptions. You can read more about this on the guadadopt.org website. I think those changes are now on hold and there are other issues now that are mentioned on this list serve. Good luck! |
