Proposal to raise adoption tax credit
Here is the info posted on the big list about a proposed bill.
Congressman Ford from Tenn. has introduced a bill to raise the adoption tax credit to $15,000.00. That would be so helpful to all soon to be adoptive parents. Please help us to get this passed. Please write your Congressman via the internet. You may do so by clicking on the link below:_Contact Your Congressional Representative_ http://www.house.gov/writerep Please support it!!! Lisa

Great!!!
This would be great for all prospective adoptive parents!!! Please contact you Congressman. However, I have heard (on other issues) that it is better to write a hard copy letter, you know the old fashioned way with paper and pen (
). They (people from my church) said that the congressmen pay more attention to letters that come through snail mail (USPS) than through email. Of course, anything is better than nothing, but it seems this is a big enough issue we should each take time to write a letter. Thank you, Carney10, for the information. Cheryl |

It looks like this is currently in the Committee on ways and means... anyone know the timeline for this?
here is the only stuff I could find on it. http://www.theorator.com/bills109/hr1561.html Sonja |

What i would really like to see is for the adoption credit to be available for EVERYONE. I don't qualify b/c we make too much money. I understand it's good that we make good money, but hey--I shelled out the cash just like everyone else and I don't see a nickel of the adoption credit!

I couldn't find any more on it either... all the website said was "Referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means." I don't even know what "Ways & Means" means!
I hope that this passes. I wrote to my congress woman and told her how much this would help adoptive parents... It would be so nice to have extra help. And I agree on dropping the income requirement- in my mind, everyone should have the right to recoup some of these costs... it is SO expensive, any help is welcome! |

Another great thing about this bill is making the credit refundable. Lower income families or those with very little tax liability get little or no benefit from this credit because it is not refundable. However, this is also one of the clauses that may cause major heartburn with the ways & means committee (they determine what effect new bills will have on the revenue bottom line).

I would love to see bill changed to allow lower income familes with little tax liability to get refunded. Dh and I have spent over $20,000 for two domestic adoptions, and the tax credit as it is does NOTHING for us!!!! We are slowly trying to pay these loans off that we had to borrow for these two adoptions.
We make very little money, and our tax liability is very low -- If we could only get that money back, it would make our dreams of wanting to adopt from Ethiopia a reality. Emily |
