Hi,
I'm new here and have lots of questions, but the biggest is this, I just turned 36 and my husband will be 36 at the end of the summer. We've been married for 4-1/2 years... are we too old for an infant if we do an international adoption? Thanks to all! Laurie |

Short answer: No, you're not too old (I don't think for any country that's doing IA with the US).
But, there are few countries where the children are still infants when they come home--and most of those aren't any younger than 6 months old.

36 is considered prime for most countries...I don't remember which one it was, but my hubby was 31 when we started and he was actually too young for one. Infant though is a very loose term in international adoption. You need to look at what each country considers an infant before you lock into one specific country. For instance China considers them to be infants until 24 months.
Hope this helps, and if you have more questions feel free to ask or PM. |

Colombia is one country that prefers younger parents. It used to be that the limit was 35 for and infant from the government programs. But I believe that has now gone up to 37 or 38 and the private adoption houses have different age preferrences.
I would agree that you are probably in the prime range for adoption in general, but what you mean by "infant" is probably what you should define for yourselves.

The prior poster is correct. You're probably too old for Colombia, but my husband and I are both older than you and we adopted an infant from Guatemala. I think there are a lot of country/program options for you at your age. Good luck!

I'm 37 and DH is 35. We've been recommended by our SW for an infant from China. We were told China considers an infant up to 18 months. Right now the average age appears to be about 12-14 months old.
