cambodian adoptions on 20/20 tonight.

http://www.grad.washington.edu/stsv/mastapp.aspx

A very sad story on tv tonight.

March 25, 2005 —*For years Lauryn Galindo made a career as a go-between, finding Cambodian children for American families eager to adopt a child. But some of the children she placed in American homes weren't really orphans, but children bought from desperately poor families. In a special "20/20" investigation Elizabeth Vargas talked with Galindo and traveled to Cambodia to meet the women and children at the heart of the story.

Galindo is now facing an 18-month prison sentence for visa fraud and money laundering related to the adoptions.

U.S. Families Learn Truth About Adopted Cambodian Children

Adoption advocates like Trish Maskew, president and CEO of Ethica: A Voice for Ethical Adoption (ethicanet.org), were outraged by the scandal, which led to a moratorium on Cambodian adoptions. Maskew's organization offers information on both domestic and international adoption — including a detailed definition of what the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service considers an "orphan."

Red face

I watched the show too. It was really sad. I think Ms. Galindo's heart was in the right place, but she did not go about the adoption process correctly. There are plenty of "real" orphans in this world without having to "buy" babies.

Angry Sad story

A really sad story about kids who will never know who their parents are, and a woman who made millions buying and selling them.
