Talking Give Me Reads!

Ok, so I've read "Meeting Sophie", "The Lost Daughters of China", and "Adoption for Dummies". I'm currently requesting what probably amounts to my county library's entire stock material on adoption.

What have you guys read (doesn't HAVE to be specifically international, although since DH and I are adopting from China, it wouldn't hurt) that have been informative, inspirational, or just plain fun?

If you want to suggest movies (I have "China's Lost Girls" on order from Netflix), links, or articles too- blast away! I want to know what all of you lovely folk have found to help you best in this process, whether it's been to keep you motivated... or keep you sane.

Wanting a daughter, needing a son
Toddler adoption, The weavers craft
I also suggest you puchase the NG video, you'll want to share it with family and later with your dd, it's amazing
We are gave copies of the Lost Daughters of China book to our parents (also avid readers) for Christmas. Amazon has amazing prices on their books, I was able to buy most not from Amazon but their affiliates listed in the new and used catagories for under $7 (that included shipping)
We also got I love you like crazy cakes, now available as a board book for little hands,
Little miss spider (which I love, love, love) and the White swan book (which I don't like as much)
We are now reading Baby Bargains and Toddler Bargains along with Vicki Iovine's Toddler book (If you've never read her books they're great- very funny and practical)
It all helps pass the time!

Read "The Waiting Child". You won't be able to put it down.

"Our Own" by Trish Maskew is also very good. Lots of information. More appropriate when adopting an older child, but informative nonetheless.

"Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew"

Happy reading.

I think we watched almost every episode of "Adoption Stories" on Discovery Health - for us it was good because some of the episodes addressed some of the concerns we had and was just a good thing to get us thinking or talking about what our plans were. As it turned out the orphanage we adopted our daughter from was on of the first Adoption stories we watched (The Cote family and same agency too - although we didn't know that when we picked it). So when we showed up at the orphanage we recognized the head nurse and felt a little better!

Is it possible to catch any of these adoption stories via the library or on the web? i don't get the channel and wish I could have watched them.

Thanks

Give Me Reads!

Hi! My husband and I are also in the beginning stages of an adoption from China (this is actually my first response on the forum). I, too, am reading everything I can get my hands on. I just finished reading "A Passage to the Heart" edited by Amy Klatzkin. It is a collection of articles published in newsletters of Families with Children from China support groups. It was very informative.
Good Luck,
Amy

"Adopting the Hurt Child" by Keck and Kupecky. Really good if your are adopting a child older than 1. Still a good read even if your child is an infant.

I actually found this book to be somewhat shallow in actual content as compared to Gray's book--and it spends a lot of time railing on the foster/adoptive system, which while all true took time away from what I expected to read.. Keck's book and the subsequent Parenting the Hurt Child are still good to read, but they both left me wanting.
