Congratulations on your decision...
... China adoption is wonderful. I know, as I have a wonderful daughter from China. I am a single woman, and I adopted when I was 51; I'm 57 now. My daughter was 18.5 months old when I met her, and she is now 7.5 years old. She is healthy, intelligent, loving, and gorgeous -- a true delight.
China's process is ethical and well-organized. While the process is currently quite long, the program is very stable and there are rarely any unpleasant surprises. The China Center for Adoption Affairs, which assigns all of the children being adopted by foreigners, really seems to do a good job in matching children to parents.
Obviously, there are risks in all adoptions, and China is no exception. There are a lot of unknowns, since the children have all been abandoned and there is no birthparent history to go by. And the medical system in place within China is not Western in its orientation, so it's hard to be sure that the Chinese medical report is comparable to one done by a Western doctor. Still, China does a pretty good job in caring for its children in need of homes.
I am American, so I can't advise you on British agencies. I do, however, want to congratulate you on your choice of country and say that single parenthood is more fun than you can imagine. Do be sure, of course, that you have a good support system in place -- family, friends, etc. -- and that you have thought out the economic issues, such as paying for child care while you work and having adequate savings in case you become unemployed.
