I adopted a girl from China when she was four. I recommend to read all books you can get your hands on. There are many on the subject of adopting older children. The most important key is to follow the childs pace. As hard as it was I did not hug or kiss her when I first met her. I made sure I was on her eye level when I talked to her, even though it was English to Chinese. Just remember to take it slow. It only took a day or so and she was holding my hand and smiling. Best of luck to you.
