Serbia/Yugoslavia
We are considering adoption from the former Yugoslavia, now called Belgrade. Does any one have any information on adoption from this country? Thanks!

It's actually called Serbia now; Belgrade is the capital. This is a list of documents you must submit to the Yugoslav Ministry for social affairs in order to be considered for adoption:
1. Written explanation why the prospective parents whish to adopt; 2. Autobiography; 3. Home study from your local social agency (determining if you are fit to adopt) as well as the agency's credentials- this home study is something you will need in order to file I-600A also; 4. Birth certificates; 5. Marriage certificate; 6. Proof that there are no criminal trials, investigations or charges taking place; 7. Proof from the medical doctor about your psycho-physical condition; 8. Proof of current employment, salary, assets and living conditions; 9. Proof that according to your local laws you are fit to adopt; 10. Copy of your citizenship certificate (or copy of your passport); 11. Photograph. All documents must be originals with the translations done by the official court interpreter. These documents must be submitted to the Ministry for Social affairs "Ministarstvo za socijalna pitanja- Odsek za normativno-pravnu i analiticku delatnost", address is Nemanjina 22-26, 11000 Beograd. When and if your application is approved you need to come and meet the child. The waiting period varies depending on the current situation, meaning if they have a child that other couple didn't want to adopt, and you do, you will jump the line and be ahead of others. There are about 15 international adoptions yearly, so not a lot, but it's possible. |

Balkan Adoptions
I started a group on yahoo for Balkan Adoptions because
someone asked about adopting from the Former Yugoslavia. It also covers the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, etc. It isn't very active because there aren't a lot of people adopting from there. But I did a lot of research and have a ton of links. If you are interested, you can find it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Balkan_Adoptions For some strange reason I believe it's easier to adopt from Yugoslavia if you are Canadian (I found an agency called Sunrise Adoptions that appears to have an active program. I contacted an American Agency (it's listed in the files, and I can't remember now, but when I asked for info specifically about Yugoslavia they sent me a package of their over all program and it only had a one liner about FRY. I hear it's not cheap, but then again neither is adopting from Russia. Mary list owner |
