Most families do not want to make 2 trips, 4-6 months apart to bring their child home. I know the process for Honduras is very slow, on the part of Junta, the Honduras court system. The children are very beautiful, and it is a shame that more children are not coming home from Honduras. I bet your son is a blesssing to you.! mamita

You are correct about the 2 visits and months apart and the problems with red tape/judges in the country. We first saw our son at age 3 and a half months in April and were finally able to bring him home 6 days before his first Birthday. His case sat on a judge's desk month after month just waiting for one signature. We were so heart-sick waiting to bring him home. We were so fortunate that he had a kind, loving foster mother to care for him. Also fortunate for us was the fact that we had had an AFS exchange student from Honduras a few years before. We were able to stay at her house for the 2 trips. They made sure we were well cared for and safe. When we weren't in the country, they would telephone our foster mother or visit our son. I believe our agency closed their work with Honduras adoptions after ours was complete. It is ashame because the people and children are beautiful. The people are proud of their interesting culture. Our son is God's blessing in the truest form. He has a 16 month old sister adopted from USA. She is our other blessing. We are so fortunate to have these two children to love. Their beauty is boundless. Thanks, Abby

Next year I get to deal with INS when we file for citizenship. A friend told me you don't have to have a lawyer to adopt in Honduras. They went to the courthouse with child and parents. Both families signed papers, the birth certificate was changed. It cost about $85.

Both my brother and sister (6 months apart in age) were adopted from Honduras in '86. I don't remember much about the adoption process because at the time I was 7 yrs old.
My brother was cared for by a foster family until my mom, dad and I were able to go down and get him. My sister was cared for by the social worker's mother in their home. We stayed in the small town of La Ceiba which is where my brother is from (I don't recall the name of where my sister was from). I myself was adopted in '80 from Bogota, Colombia at the age of 2. First we stayed in a hotel in La Ceiba and than a nun who was from Rhode Island and lived in La Ceiba welcomed us to live with her in the convent! She was the only one living in this convent and she taught school on the first floor. While there I celebrated my 8th birthday - complete with a pinata and cake and of course Honduran friends that I made there. We were down there so long that I went to school there. At Mazapan School. I was in 3rd grade and loved it. The wait was long, and according to my mom it seemed like the rules were being changed everytime we went to do something. Which of course meant more set backs but we finally got my sister Debbie and brother Allan. We got them at the age of 1 yr (Debbie) and 6 months (Allan). I hope you enjoy this short story from a loving sister of Honduran adoptees. Meredith ![]() |
