Welcome Kim

Hi Kim:

Welcome to the Korean Adoptee's Forum. Glad you found this forum.

All you would need to do is to post a question on this forum (just as you did above this post) and another Korean Adoptee will come on an answer you. Sometimes people reply that have had close relationships with Korean Adoptees as they may have a question to ask you or other Korean Adoptees.

Please tell a little bit about yourself and your adoption experience and end your post with a question. It would be great to hear from you!

Thank very much, Kim!

Warm regards,

Not to take away from this forum, however there are korean adoption specific boards that have A LOT of activity going on... you may want to check them out. Just search through Yahoo Groups and you will have a flurry of groups come up. The most active and populated is Korean Adoptees Worldwide.

Furthermore, if you are from Oregon... there is also a Korean adoptee group that meets out of Portland I believe. If you want, I can pmail it to you... I'd just have to dig it up.

HI

I am a Korean adoptee and would love to talk to others like me. I am recently searching, but it is not going so well mainly because I have so many odds placed against me. I was wondering if anyone else has tried to search and had difficulties due to language barriers and such? Please let me know thanks.

Monica

fellow korean adoptee

Hi Monica,

I'm guessing you mean you've been searching for your birth parents, right? A few years ago I studied in Seoul and a lot of my classmates were adopted and looking to reunite with their birthparents. You should definitely try to find a translator. Do you know what agency in Korean you were adopted through? Might also start trying to contact the agency your a-parents went through here.

I know what you mean by odds against you. There's basically no hope of me finding anything about my birth parents because I was abandoned. Good luck to you though.

I'd love to exchange emails if you want. This is my first time visiting this site.

Lindsay

new here...

Hi all,
I'm a Korean adoptee as well and stumbled upon this forum while surfing the net.
I went to Korea last summer, and also met my birthfamily last week, because they live in Boston. Needless to say, I feel as though someone has pulled the proverbial rug out from under my feet.
So that's my little introduction. *bows* Hope to hear from some of you soon!

Born in

Well after 40 + years I am starting a search for my birth parents. I was born 5/17/57 in Seoul Korea; Adopted in 1961 by William and Margaret Hewitt. Adopted father was in the Air Force; Birth mother was Korean; Birth Father was African-American and (I have been told) was probably also in the military. Birth Name: Moon Hi Me (or Mi). Don't know what orphanage or what agency handled adoption. Trying to get a translation of the single document I have in my possession (I believe it is my birth certificate). Any tips, clues, encouragement would be GREATLY appreciated and welcome. God Bless!

You should try to find out which adoption agency in Korea was used. Furthermore if you have the name of your birthfather you may be able to look it up in some military registery. You need the name, rank and place he serverd, then they may locate him.
If you try to search in Korea you definitely need more information.
Ask anyone who was involved in your adoption.

Unhappy Tried to Search but no luck

I also posted this on the main forum:

I was adopted from Korea when I was 3 months old and since I learned I was adopted it has been my mission to find my birthparents. As I grew up I had soo much trouble with being adopted, I couldn't find where I belonged in my American family that loved me very much. I recently turned 18 and started my search, and of course I was hoping for the best, I was hoping the adoption agency would come back and say these are your birthparents and they would love to meet you. But they didn't, a lady from Holt called me and told me that my parents were 22 when they had me and unmarried, so they were protected by Korean law, so I could not find out who they were, unless they wanted to see me. And that was the day that my dreams were shattered..is there anyone out there that can realte with me?? I'm having a really hard time dealing with it, and I have no one around me even Korean let alone adopted. So please if you have some advice please give it. I really need some

Hello,

I just stumbled upon this website one night while surfing the web. I was adopted from Korea about 21 years ago. I am coming up close to my 21 year anniversary. I really do not know much surrounding the events that led to my adoption and I really do not remember much from them either. I have begun the process of trying to locate my birthparents, but I have a feeling that this journey will be one that I may never finish. I am relieved to see that there are other people who have also been adopted and now I have a way to communicate with them.

Hello,
This is my first time posting. I am a Korean adoptee. I have also been searching for my birth parents. 3 weeks ago I received an e-mail from Holt saying they found them and wanted me to write a letter. I have yet to write it yet, I don't know what to write to them....how do I put into words what my life has been like the last 20 years? I almost wish I hadn't found them. I have no-one around me to relate to me because there are very few minorities that go to my college (i don't go to duke btw, just a big fan of basketball) and even less adoptees. I was just wondering if anyone else is going through anything similiar.

Translation troubles....

Please e-mail me at Kim_yoon_mi@yahoo.com...

My brother, and my adoptive parents and I plan to go to Korea and Japan in the Spring of 2005.

I want to give the agency who are trying to find my parents an easier time in translating the letter I want to send to my birth parents. I know there are taboos surrounding adoption in Korea, so I want to find a translator that has experience, or at least know-how in this subject.

I was going to try a friend, but she fell through, and my brother, who is also adopted and taking Korean is unwilling to help me out. (either it's resistence to the subject, which is hidden, or its that he only half cares.

Do you know of any organizations that are willing to help out in this aspect of adoption?

Later,
Yoonmi
