X-Posted - Indiana adoption legislation

For anyone interested in keeping up to date on changes in laws affecting adoptions, you can visit this link Session Information - Subject Listing.

There is a specific link to current bills on Adoption of Children, but you can also find interesting pieces under other subjects such as Family Law, and Children, among others.

Usually when the House and Senate are in session, daily during lunch hours, special interest groups will gather to help further their causes or educate our legislators. Monday, January 29th, is a day when many people will be going to represent adoption triad members and educate others.

Our agency, as part of the coalition of Indiana Adoption Agencies United, sent a letter to adoptive families to let us know this was going on and to ask for support as they work to educate the legislators on the positives of adoption. In particular, they're working on with a Senator "on issues regarding adoption facilitators in the State of Indiana".

I've not attended something like this before, but plan to go next week with at least one other adoptive mom and adoptive auntie. I hope it is fun, and think it will be interesting and educational!

I forgot to update on this!

I attended this day at the State house with another forum friend and my sister (who, thankfully, has great experience lobbying).

We got to see several people from our adoption agency there representing, as well as many of the other Indiana agencies. Our agency even had a birthmom there! There were a couple of kids there, and one large adoptive family. The rest of us proud parents were sporting photos of our children.

Basically, some of the reps and senators came down on their lunch breaks to grab a box lunch, meet us, and talk. A few were interested in hearing our personal stories. Some just wanted us to know they supported the current legislation. Some just wanted to be there to put faces to the cause.

My sister was quite helpful - she stationed near the elevators and introduced us to all the reps and lawyers and lobbyists she knew, and anyone who even stopped her just to say, 'Hi" got an earful about the current bill and why they needed to support it. (She's a proud adoptive auntie!)

We also met another really nice adoptive mom who lives in Carmel and is a WAHM who does spa parties and sells a lovely line of spa and pampering items! What a great way to network! She got to spend time, on the floor in the House, talking with her rep.

It was a really fun experience! (Topped off with a nice latte at Neiman Marcus). I plan to do this again, whenever the coalition or our agency does this.

Hope more can be with us next time!

Stork sounds like it was a great day! I am still bummed that I couldn't go this year. I will for sure go the next time. Thanks for updating your experience.
