Enrolling kids in school
We received 4 children this weekend that were emergency placements. These are our first placements so everything is new. The case worker for the first 2 sisters came today and as luck would have it, this is her very first case.
I had questions that she couldn't answer. I have to enroll one of the 13 year old girls in school tomorrow since she and her baby sister will be her indefinitely. They have been in the system for a number of years but there are no medical records for them. Do schools normally understand this or will I have to take her to get all of her immunizations before the school will enroll her? I thought I read somewhere that they qualify for free or reduced lunch at school but the caseworker said she thought is part of the per diem that we might see next month but more than likely in January. Can anyone shed some light on how to enroll foster children in school. We live too far from her old school.

I've never have to fulling enroll a child in school, just had to let them know we were the child's foster parents. The school knew what I need to do. So I would just call the school and talk to the secertary if they can't help you I'm sure they know who can.

the school should transfer the records from the old school. the shot records should already be in the school file. School lunches and breakfast should be free. You also do not have to pay for school fees only alot of agencies do not know this or the school will try and make you pay. If that is the case and they want money, email me and I will send you a copy of the rule about the money. I paid for years and then found out that I did not have to. A principal said they get more money from the state if they have kids on assistance.

It was pretty easy
Thanks everyone. I called the school before going in to give them a heads up. When I arrived, the first paper the secretary told me about was for the free lunch and free text book rental. It turns out the previous school listed was the one she was enrolled in for one day and never attended so they are in the process of trying to get the info from the school before that. FD said she has been out of school for 3-4 weeks because they were in the process of moving. She's in 5th grade but should be in 8th. That doesn't seem to bother her though. It will be a big transistion because she was in elementary school and our school system she will be in Intermediate school with 5th and 6th graders.
