Our home study was more than just them "checking our house". It includes writing an essay about your childhood, your family, your beliefs, etc. If you are applying with another person (a spouse, fiance, or another adult in the house), you have to describe your relationship with them. They also have to complete the essay as well.

There are a lot of steps to the home study. The actual home VISIT part of the home study is when your house is inspected. You can request a list of the main outline of things they will be checking for. Some of them are fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, ample space for the child, cleanliness of the home, cooking equipment, refrigeration equipment, etc. Usually all of your chemicals, knives and lighters have to be locked up and not within reach of a child.

If you are adopting or fostering a younger child, I believe you have to baby/toddler proof the house.

Good luck!

Our homestudy visits was mostly going over our Family Assessment (your life history on paper), and seeing if anything had changed since we applied to foster to adopt, like feelings about adopting and fostering, the number of children we were willing to take or the age ranges. We also had to make a family tree from our parents to our children.

We then moved on to the home inspection part. Here they checked to see if we had running water, a fire extinguisher, working smoke alarms, that any firearms we had in the house were in a locked cabinet or had a gun lock on them, and that any cleaning supplies or other chemicals like pesticides were stored away properly. They also then checked to see how many children we could have based on the size of our bedrooms (50 sq. ft. per child).
