Cool

I have been in, out, up, down and all around the Indiana system over the years. I finally applied for the state-appointed Confidential Intermediary Program in 2002, and they located my birthmom in January of 2003. It was no small task, as she had no desire to be located! It took about three and a half months from the beginning of the process to the end, and cost about $400.
My intermediary explained that she keeps files on all the birthparents she attempts to locate and once they pass away, she is notified.....she can then re-apply on our behalf to open the files so the "next closest relative" can attempt to be contacted -- for example, your oldest living sibling.
I had no information listed at the state-level, regarding my father, and when my birthmom denied contact, my intermediary contacted Delaware County, to see if there was anything listed on him at the county level......but she was informed that my files, along with many others, were destroyed in a fire in the early 70's. I thought that sounded like a bunch of "hooey", so I contacted them myself, and was given the same story. All they had on me were copies from the state....the same stuff my intermediary had.
Hang in there!
Sally

That doesn't sound right...they gave me a lot of information at the county level just a few years ago. Maybe it's only selective files that are lost. Do you have any pre-adoptive siblings?

Found birthfamily after searching 22 years...both parents are dead, but I found 2 wonderful half sisters!
(and the "not significant" medical history? both died of cancer...1 at 48...1 at 52...looks like I don't have much time left...)

Cool

I have three siblings born after me.....a sister and two brothers.
I know where they are......as well as where my birthmother is. They all live in the same county as I do......my mom is about 10 minutes from me.
My siblings have no idea that I exist, and there are a lot of "circumstances" surrounding my decision not to inform them -- my "story" is all over this forum, so I won't go into all of that here, but suffice it to say that I am no longer in "search mode" -- more like "recovery"! LOL
I would like to know who my father is, but my mother won't come off the info....she didn't even tell her sister, who she was living with at the time she was pregnant, who he was. Maybe she doesn't know his name and is too ashamed to say so -- who knows?
I've had contact with my mother's sister -- my aunt. She was actually someone I knew when I was in school. Her daughter and I played on the same sports teams!
At any rate.....I wish you the best! Keep us posted! I'd be interested to hear what you find out along the way, since we are in the same state.
Hugs,
Sally

Cool

Willjack,
When I applied to have my records unsealed and turned over to an intermediary, it was at the state level, and all the paperwork went thru the Attorney General's office. My CI handled it all, but I received copies in the mail to sign.
She files all requests for intermediaries thru Howard County, because they are one of only two, I think, that will still accept a petition to open files without an attorney. If you have to have an attorney to file on your behalf, you can tack on about $1500 to the price tag. Howard county will accept a petition from an individual, and makes things much cheaper.
My intermediary sent me paperwork to fill out...which I did and then sent it back to her. She took the paperwork to Howard County and filed the petition....it cost $107 for the filing fee. Howard County sent the petition to the state, who approved the appointment of the intermediary and sent it, along with my files, back to Howard County, where Lori, my intermediary picked up everything and began her search.
After the search was complete, she filed the information with Howard County, who sent it on to the state.
Hope that helps!
Sally

Cool

I am sure that may be the case.....since I was not adopted thru an agency, but rather thru private adoption, this wasn't an option for me, and not something I have a lot of knowledge about.
There is someone here at the forum, named Colleen -- her username is "thesearchguru". Go up to the tab above and click on the search tab. Type in thesearchguru in the "search by username" area. You can message her and ask her how all of that works, and she can help you! She's the best when it comes to information!
Best of luck!
Sally

Question looking for mother 1966-indianapolis

Born 6-20-66, mother may have spoke diffrent languages. I think that I have at least 3 brothers & sisters who are older. I am a female, I was given to my current parents at the U.of Ind.It took 1 year to finalize my adoption in court. Biological mother wanted to leave her name and see me but Butchers(parents) said no. Any help? Hard to get records in marion county.
