Adoption by Older Couple
Some relatives of mine are considering adopting an older child from India. The couple is 53 & 56. I read on Cara's website that there are no age limits, however, some agencies I have contacted say that India does have age limits. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks! |

My understanding is that the parents cannot be more than 40 years older than the child they're adopting.
But I'm very new to this and maybe someone else can give you more accurate info. |

Age limits
The last writer was correct, the standard age rule for Indian adoption is that the younger parent can be no more than 40 years older than the child. At least the US adoption agencies we spoke to (4) enforced that equation. So in a couple where the younger spouse is 53, they would qualify for a child 13 or older. I'm unsure if there are exceptions in the case of special needs adoptions - that may be a possibility. Hope this helps.

From the cara web site:
For a young child, the wife must be under forty (40) years of age, the husband must be under forty-five (45) years of age or the combined total years of age should be under ninety (90) years. You can check it out at: http://www.adoptacarakid.org/adoption/foreign/#ind This was a huge relief for us as dh is 39 and I'm 38. Hope this helps. ![]() |

Asha is right...the combined age of a couple should be 90. And we are on the dot 90 together and come February my husband will be a year older and so I am praying that our process would go through before February (the cut off age category for us) but I also understand that they do make exceptions depending upon the qualitifcation of the parents. That's what we are counting on.
