Adoption from an unlicensed orphanage
I was recently in Bangalore on business for an extended period. During this time, my husband and I volunteered at a local orphanage which is not licensed to handle international adoptions. We became very close with the children there, especially one little boy. I've done some research and it looks like for us to be able to adopt him, he would have to be transferred to an orphanage that is licensed to do international adoptions. Has anyone done a transfer like this before? Also, if there is an easier way besides transfering him, please let me know. I would prefer not to put him through the trauma of being relocated to a new orphanage.
The little boy is over 6 years old. I have heard that children over 6 are treated slightly different in the adoption process than younger children in that 1) they do not have to be held for adoption to Indian parents first before being offered for foreign adoption and 2) they receive preferential processing by CARA. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?
Finally, does anyone know of U.S. agencies that have programs with orphanages in Bangalore?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
