I would like advice on helping a 3 1/2 year old adjust to life in the States when she speaks only Hindi. I have been meeting with a tutor to learn basic words but still feel incompetent. Anyone else experience this situation and how did you handle it? Am I worrying for nothing?

We adopted both of our daughters when they were 20 months old and they caught on very quickly to English. We also learned basics in Telugu and Marathi before they came home, to help with the adjustment. Your child is older and it may be a slightly different situation for your family. I'm sure if you are learning some Hindi, the transition will be fairly smooth as far as language.

You might consider joining OLDER-CHILD as that list is made up of mostly of families who've adopted older children from India.
