Adoption om Birth Mother in India Questions!

Hello, this is my first post here on adoption.com

My wife and I have always been interested in growing our family through adoption and recently an opportunity has come to our attention.

I became friends with a man from Mumbai while he was visiting North Carolina for work and visited our Church. We became friends on facebook and about 3 weeks ago he confided with me and told me his sister had become pregnant out of marriage and gave birth to a baby girl. Both my wife and I prayed about this and saw an opportunity to adopt this girl because they would be putting her up for adoption in India due to the social stigma of single parent families.

A cursory look online suggests very LONG adoption times. My question is does it look the same (duration) if the adoption would be from the birth mother directly to the adoptive parents vs adoption agency to birth parents?

Thank you very much for reading and any information you may have.

Merry Christmas!

I would be verYinterested in this question being answered. We just moved to India from Oregon as expats. We adopted our son from Ethiopia and I always wanted to do an infant adoption. I'll keep checking back to see if there are any post. I will also contact the church we go to here to see if they have any info as well. Great luch if all works out.

Hi, India has signed the Hague convention on international adoption as has the USA, so you can't do a private adoption between India and the USA, you must go through an agency and pass through the formal state channels/procedures that India and the USA have created to manage international adoptions. Take a look here: INDIA | Intercountry Adoption
Good luck!

I understand you met this man briefly at church and were friends with him on Facebook for three weeks before he "confided in you". I know one wants to believe that someone they met at church could be trying to take advantage of them. I would be very suspicious of this situation.

There are many adoption scams out there, and it is quite common for perpetrators to meet their targets in trusted places--more likely for individuals to fall for it. He may even suggest he knows how to make the adoption happen, has contacted an atty in India, etc. But as the previous poster stated, India is a part of the Hague convention.

The Hague convention in intended to prevent baby selling (if there is actually a baby even in existence in this case), fraud and corruption in the adoption world. That is why you need to find a Hague accredited agency (seen adoption.state.gov for a list) to discuss any adoption from India. USCIS which is the agency that you must go through in order to bring your child home will never approve you if you are attempting to adopt through India without an Hague accredited agency.

Again, do not take this man's word for it. Even if he has pictures of a pregnant woman and/or ultrasound. Follow the law and it will protect you from fraud and emotional extortion.
