Question on adopting from India
Hi all,
We are new to adoption and are planning to go that path, since our attempts to have a baby has resulted in repeated failures. My husband is a US citizen and I am still a gc holder. My questions are: Is it easy for an Indian citizen to adopt from India? We would like to adopt an infant, so do you think it would be easier if I remain on GC than becoming a citizen? Also if I adopt as an Indian from India, how long it would take to bring the child to US? Or can my husband start the process over here, meantime I adopt over there? I would appreciate any replies. Kind of confused since we just came to this conclusion. thanks Leena |

My questions are: Is it easy for an Indian citizen to adopt from India? We would like to adopt an infant, so do you think it would be easier if I remain on GC than becoming a citizen? Atleast one parents needs to be a US citizen to adopt from India so I think you are ok if you don't choose to be a US citizen. Also if I adopt as an Indian from India, how long it would take to bring the child to US? Or can my husband start the process over here, meantime I adopt over there? If you were to start the process as a GC holder; you may want to be aware of the limitations on time that you can be out of the country. Because given the time for the process you don't want to loose your GC status. Also, I think you need to be with the child for 2 years should you decide to adopt in India before bringing them here so that could be an additional issue too. I am sure you'll find more in depth information regarding this on this forum. I don't know anything about the simultenous processing. Hope this helps. Good Luck, Vinita |

There is no such thing as an "easy" adoption. Whether you adopt from India or US, there will be lots of paperwork, home study and waiting.
Vinita is correct, though, from India you need to be there two years. In US, it will take about two years to process, depending on what agency you choose. Being of Indian nationality will help you with a referral, especially if you want an infant. Children arriving from India are usually around one year old or so due to the time it takes to go through the process in Indian courts, about six months after referral. Be sure to research different agencies. You don't have to go with an agency just because it is in your state. Ask questions regarding their "rules" ie, birth order, time between adoption, gender availability, etc. if these are important to you. Best of luck, Melimon |
