My husband and I are planning to move forward with adoption this year. We are open to adopting from any country but since my husband is of Indian descent we thought adopting from India would be ideal, based on common background, culture, and yes, speed of the adoption. Like many couples on this discussion board, we would like to adopt a young child, less than 2 years. I believe we would bond and love any child regardless of age, I just want to spend as much of our lives together as possible.

Has any one here adopted from India recently as a OCI (overseas citizen of India)? He is just now starting the paper work to get his card before we move forward. Are we being naive to think that this will speed up the adoption process more so than say Ethiopia or Kazakhstan? Thanks.

We have not started the adoption process, but from what I have heard the agencies that work with India are quoting about a 2 year wait - even with an OCI card.

My wife and I are almost through the process. We are adopting from India. We did get an OCI card for my wife, but as best as I could tell it did not speed the process. I believe there are quite a few factors that affect whether it will expedite things - age, in country champions, etc. What agency are you thinking of using? We used MAPS.

We also adopted from India this year with an OCI status. I agree with the previous post. It didn't really seem to speed up the process, but it does make you eligible to adopt a child under age 2 without special needs. Many agencies have restrictions. I know of one couple who is adopting through the same agency we used and is still waiting for a referral after nearly two years. They are not of Indian origin. Our adoption took just under two years from initial application to travel.
