I started looking into India adoption in October 2006 and decided at that time I needed more information before continuing the process. By March of 2007 the program was closed and from what I read at the time the government of India was working to make foreign adoptions easier. Now it looks like it's closed to non-NRI's indefinetly. I was really set on India (or Nepal) and just want to know if I should wait it out or move on.

Maisymae, you should look into our agency's programs...not sure which one has closed the India program but there are many that still have it. Rules have tightened somewhat though.

Big Boy,
What's the name of your agency? I know that waiting children are still available for "anyone" approved for India, but I just don't know how to go about it with my local agencies. I haven't signed up with an agency yet and don't know if I should or if I should start my home study independently or not. any more suggestions? maisymae |

I do not think that all agancys have closed the India program. I know that the agancy that we used is still open to all. The wait has gotten a little longer but I do not belive by much

Limiting to NRIs is an agency decision. It is not a policy of India. There are agencies that will work with non-NRIs. The reason many agencies only work with NRIs is because it's less paperwork on their part.

Hi! We are also from MN and are adopting from India. We used LSS for our local home study and then are using an agency from another state (AIAA from Michigan) to do the Indian adoption. You can use 2 agencies, one from MN for local stuff and one from anywhere for the placement. We had also applied to WACAP in WA- they are another good choice for Indian adoption. Both of these agencies will work with a non-NRI adoptive parent- contact them if you are open to a child with moderate special needs or an older child.
Good luck! sunshine12700 in N. MN |
