Looking for some guidance
My husband and I have two biological daughters and we would like to adopt a baby girl from India. I know that we meet the age requirements, but it's not clear from what I've read whether or not it is possible for us to adopt a non-special needs or older child since neither of us is Indian. We currently live in California but may be moving back to New York next year. Will a move across country effect our chances to adopt? Could someone please recommend agencies that they have had success with? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

Try Children's Home Society and Family Services, which has been working in India for years and has a fairly stable program. Based on its website, the agency accepts non-Indian families and people who are not infertile; only one of the Indian states with which it works requires proof of primary or secondary infertility.

Hi! You don't have to be of Indian descent to adopt from India, it just makes the process go a lot more smoothly and faster if you are. You can adopt an infant (12-14 months at time of referral), but you should be prepared to wait as much as 2 years in the latter case. That's why a lot of people are turned off by this program - the long wait for a healthy infant, unless you are of Indian descent. If the wait doesn't deter you, then by all means, go for it!
Check with Children's House International, they have a great program for people of Indian and non-Indian descent. Good luck! ![]()

Also looking at India
Hello,
My dh and I are in a similar situation. Neither of us is Indian and we have a bio daughter. All of the agencies I looked at seemed to be closed or for special needs only. (CHI currently states on their website that they aren't taking new families for India right now. ) We started looking at other countries and that's how we found CHSFS (mentioned in a previous post) and their program looks good. We also found Wide Horizons. I've just requested info from both agencies. Good luck - if I hear anything I'll pass it along.Kim |

You can also try Holt Int'l. They are still open. The wait is long but they are still open
