We have been told it is possible to adopt from Russia independently, without an accredited US agency. How do we start this process? Where can we find contacts in Russia?

The Russian government set up a process of accreditation for agencies and also a process to review and approve native bilingual adoption representatives in their country. Thus it seems unlikely that they would encourage non residents to adopt without an agency.

The process is complicated, usually requires two trips, and close coordination of the referral, travel and documentation by experienced staff in the United States and in Russia. I can't imagine trying to adopt without the expertise and protection that an experienced adoption agency can provide, but if it is possible, I'd like to know, too.

Yes, you can adopt independently from Russia. There are regions that still allow for an agency free adoption. Please visit the frua.org forum board and post your question there. The Erichsen's will never tell you this, since they are busy self promoting their adoption agency. You can adopt agency free and still meet the country and INS requirements and laws. This is not the forum to get that info.
