Adoption in the Azores

The best way to learn everything about the process is through my book, How to Adopt Internationally. There is information on Portugal and also on the Azores.

Best wishes to you.

Need info on adoptions from portugal

Hi Everyone,

I have just starting looking into getting information about adopting from the Azores (having a hard time finding info on the net!) and was happy to see I wasn't the only one trying!

I was born in Terceira, Azores and came to Canada when I was just under 2 years old. I parents have lots of relatives living there and my husband and I thought this might be a good place to start.

Thanks for letting me know it's not impossible!

I can help. I found my family, contact me and I will give you the name of a man on the island that has helped many adoptees find their families, including me.

Please be aware that it is almost impossible for Americans to adopt from Western European countries, such as Portugal.

The main reason is that there are very few adoptable children in the Western European countries, who cannot find families in their own countries. In most cases, Western Europeans are in the same situation as Americans; they adopt from countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, because there simply aren't enough children available in their own nations.

Remember that, by world standards, Western Europe is quite prosperous. Poverty in countries such as Ethiopia or Guatemala or India is what drives many families to make adoption plans for their children. Western Europe also has a low birth rate, a high standard of education (which makes people able to secure better jobs), familiarity with family planning, government social safety net programs for the poor, and so on.

Moreover, Western Europe has not had the major natural or manmade disasters, in recent years, that have devastated other countries -- for example, the AIDS crisis in parts of Africa, earthquakes in India, and so on. These crises orphan children -- and also take away relatives and community members who might take on the orphaned children; in Western Europe, there is a ready supply of family members and community members to help out if a child loses a parent.

All in all, unless you are open to a child who is over age 10, and/or who has fairly serious special needs, you would do better to look at adopting from one of the less fortunate areas of the world.

I found my birth family in Portugal

For anyone who is looking for their birth family in Azores or mainland Portugal, please don't give up hope. Please contact Terceira or me (we found our birth families in the same way). There is hope!

We adoptees from the Azores and Portugal may be rare but we still need to know that we have community and support.
