Illinois Original Birth Certificate

Curious if anyone has idea of how Illinois issues amended adoptee birth certificates? My situation was that dcfs records indicated they could not find me and my sister's original birth certificates in 1969 after our birth mother left us with neighbors. However our birth mother was arrested in appx. 1973 and was interviewed by dcfs and gave them our correct information. I have since found the name of law office that handled our adoption and a lawyer there told me that they no longer have any records of our adoption. I asked him about original birth certificates and he stated emphatically that Illinois would not have issued the amended birth certificate without having located the original Illinois birth certificate and if I was born in another state they would have had that state make a amended birth certificate. Does anyone know if this is true? Im just curious because my amended birth certificate says "delayed" on it (filing date is 1971, six years after my birth and our adoption wasnt finalized until I was about 11 years old in 1976). Some one told me that the birth number on a Illinois birth certificate has 1 extra number in it to differentiate it from the original birth certificate, in my case take out the "0" that is in the number and that would be the birth number of my original birth certificate. I have applied for my original now that law has changed but am still worried they wont have a birth certificate for me, also if I dont have my correct birth name will Illinois still send me the uncertified original?. Thanks for all advice.

I have also been having issues with Illinois trying to get either my adoption records, or my original birth certificate. They keep giving me the run-around even though I've filled out all the proper forms, and paid the fee they asked. I keep bothering them in the hopes they will get it into their heads that I want my records, which I have a legal right to. If you live around Illinois, I'd suggest going to one of the offices there in person to speak with someone, it tends to be easier to see if people are lying face to face. If I lived near Chicago, I'd go in to speak with someone, and might in the near future if they still refuse to give me my records, or original birth certificate. Best of luck.

As of Nov 15, 2011 you can order your Illinois Original Birth Certificate from Vital Records. Go to the Adult Adoptee forum instead of the Search and Reunion forum and then to the Making Contact subforum and you will find a thread with other adult adoptees from Illiniois.

Kind regards,
Dickons

waiting and wondering

i sent in for my original birth certificate on november 15, and i live about an hour and a half away from springfield, but i still have not recieved it. i didnt send it via certified mail, and i sent a money order instead of a check. i realize these were not the right things to do after reading through this forum. the waiting is killing me and now im starting to worry that it didnt even get there. does anyone think its strange that i havnt recieved it yet, or do u know if i called springfield would they be able to tell me if they recived it? please, any help is appreciated, im so nervous and anxious.

I sent mine in on Nov. 14th with a check. I called a week or so ago to check on the status of it. They said they had received it, and if they had nothing I would have gotten something in the mail saying they didn't have records within 2 weeks of them getting the form. They said with the new law kicking in they have so many forms to go through its taking longer then originally planned. I'm not sure about the money order part, if you're concerned you should try calling the office 877-323-5299

I have. I sent in my check and paperwork on 11/15 and received my certificate this past Friday (3/2). I had been checking my online bank statement and watching for the check to clear, and it finally cleared last week. I had actually sent in another check and set of paperwork because I was convinced I had somehow messed up.

Good luck to all of you who are waiting. I can't tell you how liberating it is, just having a name to work with now. I've found (but not contacted) many family members, and this has been a surreal weekend.

call and check

they have a toll free number that will tell you what day they are working on and if you leave your current name, date of birth and phone number they will check and call you back and tell you what day your request was received on. the number is 877 323 5299. she did as that since she had told me the date mine was recieved that if i wanted to call back periodically to check on their progress that i call after hours or on the weekend which made sense to me that way they are spending more time working on getting to mine

I sent in my forms on November 15th 2011, they received them on November 18th 2011. I received my original birth certificate on April 18th 2012. They are moving slow, but they are actually mailing them out.
