Renewing Passport

I think this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if anyone had any recent experience with renewing their child's Guatemalan passport. Just realized my son's expires in August. I am wondering what the process is - do we have to do anything in advance, make an appointment, go certian days or times, what do we bring?
We would be heading to NYC for the Guatemalan embassy, I assume.
Thanks,
kathy

we did it this past summer. we went to the one in georgia. the first time it was a bust because we didn't arrive early enough to get a number. at the time there were many people seeking to get in because the immigration laws in georgia had just changed. when we went back the second time we just went before it opened and stood in line. you couldn't make an appointment. hindsight, i would have called and asked what days were best and if we needed to arrive early.

i can't remember everything i brought....but there is a thread around here somewhere. i know i brought his guatemalan passport and bc for sure. we had to have copies of the parents' us passports, and we brought money....just can't remember how much. we had to fill out paperwork for him once there- all his birth info, birth name, etc. they took his picture there. we just waited until it was our turn and then it was painless. i thought they would give us a hard time, but they treated us nicely and like they did that kind of thing (renew the passport of a guatemalan born adopted child) all the time. lol.

it was totally worth it. we will have to go again when he is 10 and then 15 and then i told him it will be his decision after that to keep it or not. but i am glad i can do this for him.

good luck!
