OT: Potty Training... and we regress

My wonderful child was completely potty trained (okay, I don't count nighttime) by 3 years old. Fabulous. He's now 3.25 years old, and peeing everywhere!!! He had 3 accidents between getting dressed this morning and leaving for preschool. I don't think there is a physical issue because he did keep his pants dry at school three days in a row with the promise of a special video.

I don't want to put him back in pull-ups because we were done with them! At the same time, I don't want to clean my couch, the car seat, the kitchen chairs, etc. 10 times a day either.

Anyone else go through this? What did you do? Our oldest didn't start potty training until he was 3, so I don't have any experience with this!

Ah, DS is 3 1/2 and has been going through v successfull potty training over the six-eight weeks, only two accidents at school. But last night he too had an accident at home - I realized my mistake - I "asked" him if he wanted to go to the potty and I should know better. The first thing we do when we get home is take off coats/hats etc. and go sit on the potty whether we need to go or not. It is not a request, it is just something we do. He only did pull-ups for two days then went straight to undies. I do not do stickers, treats, etc. since it seems to be working for the most part. I do ask him bring the soiled clothes into the kitchen and throw them in the washing machine. Before we leave the house we have been having a potty sitdown. I'm just trying to be patient - I know how easy it is for the little ones to get distracted and not 'think' about their bladders. You are not alone.

Thanks! The crazy thing is we had 4 months of perfect-potty-ing. We even went on a 1500 mile (round trip) vacation without an incident. Honestly, he had more accidents this morning than he did over the last 4 months. We don't normally bribe, but we were trying to find out if there was something physically wrong. It's like he just decided he's done using the potty! We put him on the toilet, nothing comes out (or just dribbles), we get him dressed, he pees.... just like that. BUT he's having zero accidents at school.

Like I said, our oldest was much older when he was potty trained, so I guess we should just count our blessings that the last 4 months went so well!

I went through the same thing- I did go back to pullups. I couched it directly this way

Bug, you body must not be a big boy body yet, so we have to baby it and put the pull ups back on. When you body is a big boy, then we can go back to undies.

I also went back to checking every 20 minutes. We had 1 day of this and then some accidents at night (3- 2 of which were deliberately on purpose) and then he was potty trainned again.

I probably just freaked a few folks out- but Bug knew exactly what he was doing and it was all about the power and control over me- so i took the control away from him. He wants to be a bug boy and he hates to be babied, so this works for him.

Love and hugs,
Deb

I wish my son 3 1/2 would just pee in the potty at all. He just simply refuses. He has only peed in the potty 1 time. That is it. He is very stubborn and hates the potty. He freaks out and kicks and screams if you try to make him go potty. His preschool teacher says she has never seen a child so reluctant to use the potty. My daughter on the other hand has been potty trained since she turned 2. I wish I had the answer.

Good Luck,
Natalie

I thought we were the only ones going through this, so it was good to see your post.

Manny was potty trained by age three, so this past winter, spring and summer he was fine - barely any accidents at all.

This September he began having accidents once and twice a day. For a month I kept him in underwear, but after he soiled the sofa and rug, I went back to Pull-Ups.

We figured out he started doing this when I began taking night classes. He's either mad that I'm gone or feeling insecure. When we asked him he says he gets mad that I'm not wth him.

It's getting better and I'm hoping to have him back to underpants soon. But it has been very frustrating in the meantime.

We went throught this as well and now seem to be coming out on the other side of it. Will (now 3.25) trained earlier than his brother did (daytime only) and we thought we were on the free and clear. He had been doing really well for the better part of 5-6 months. Then, he regressed totally having 5 accidents in one day. I was beside myself. We did not go back to pullups but went back to the taking him back to the potty every 20-30 minutes. That seemed to do the trick. We think 2 things happened... He got really too comfortable with his new found skill and decided he didnt need to "think" about it anymore and he was also coming down with a virus/bug and I think that might have had something to do with it. I asked the Ped about this and she said it was completely normal and not to worry about things. Hang in there! He'll come out on the other side of this soon...

We're going through the same thing, so I have no advice, but I'm glad to see all the responses! I'm also relieved to see it's so common.....Somehow I think all of my friends (who have kids who are much older) have selective memories where this is concerned. Thier kids were all easy to potty train, and somehow stayed dry all night at 2 months old (ummm, yeah right.......!!!!)
