Thumbs up OT: Toys R Us and Differently Abled Kids!

I normally don't flip through the toy catalogs that come with the Sunday paper or in the mail, because I try not to buy toys, etc...we get too many from Grandparents etc!

But yesterday I noticed the Toys R Us Christmas catalog and was very impressed with the differently abled children that were in the catalog. Maybe they do this all the time, not sure...and maybe others do it as well, but I have never noticed it.

After flipping through the catalog, I went to the website and took notice of their Autism campaign and thier differently abled campaign.

Kudos to them for realizing these kids are beautiful and placing them in their ads!

How did I miss that!? I looked @ the catalog like 4x and never picked up that those beautiful children were differently abled. BIG KUDOS to TRU. My brother is multi-handicapped (deaf, mentally retarded w/ cerebal palsy) and we are only a year apart. I normally pick up on that! (BTW my brother is and has always been a blessing to our family and an amazing individual!!!)

Toys R Us has been doing this for awhile now. I walked into a local Toys R Us a few months ago and just inside the door they had a rack with catalogs that were toys recommended for children with Autism.

Differently Abled!

Toys R Us has used this line and featured special needs children in their ads for years - I remember this when our son with CP was little - I was always so impressed by it - he is turning 19 this Christmas. I have always felt the more main stream differently abled children are featured the more comfortable people are with them. I was just explaining to my 15 year old daughter about how different her upbringing has been compared to mine. These great kids are in their classes and part of their lives - this was not the case when I was a kid. Disabilities were usually dealt with in whispers and many kids were sent away to schools and only came home on Holidays. We have come a long way!!!

Bravo to Toys R Us!

Don't know if they still have it online or not, but you used to be able to do searches for toys to help children with different issues, etc. I used it quite a bit for finding language assisting toys back in DD's speech therapy days.

We loved it too! And it gave my 4 year old and I an opportunity for some great conversations about differences.
