OT: general kid question

does your child have issues with loud noises?

i've been aware that my child cannot stand any loud noises since before the age of 2. she's now over age 4 and still cringes when i turn on the water in the bathtub. i swear it's not that loud to me.

i can understand the loud sound of some toilets when they flush. she's figured out a way to cover her ears and flush with her elbow. you should see it.

tonight while washing hair, i turned the sprayer back to water running through fawcet. she screamed for me to turn it down.

i've never taken her to a movie because they are usually too loud for me! i guess we'll need to take ear muffs or something.

did/does your child do this? and do they outgrow it?

she doesn't seem to have any other sensory issues and is a typical 4 year old in every other way.

My three-year-old is also sensitive to loud noises. I had his hearing checked and it came back normal. The pediatrician told me that it was normal for hyper-sensitive hearing and that they usually outgrow it.

There's an app on the iPhone that supposedly drives teenagers nuts -- think high-pitched like a dog whistle. My friend uses the app whenever she's in a crowded place and teenagers are bugging her. They usually leave after saying that they can't hear anything except a high-pitched buzz. She's gets a kick out of it.

Not telling you this to bore you, but if certain sounds hits teenagers wrong, then maybe certain sounds can hit our little ones weird, too.

I'd love to hear what others say.

If you notice other things...like long sleeves or being touched on the back..or just anything that bothers her....besides loud noises....it could be sensory issues...just something to keep an eye on...My daughter hates loud noises...but since we have started doing Rythmetic Movements it has helped alot as well as some other stuff that bothered her...it might just be something she will outgrow but if she doesnt...check with an OT who is trained in...tactile defensiveness....and they can tell if it is sensory issues...Beth
