surgery

I just received a phone call from Gabe's neurosurgeon in response to Gabe's MRI yesterday. The news wasn't good. His problem is bad enough to potentially cause damage to both his brain and spinal cord...and has gotten worse since his MRI in August. A date has not been set yet, but should be soon. I would appreciate any good vibes/prayers that you send his way.

I've been told that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. If that is the case, then He must think very highly of Ian and Gabe. They cannot seem to catch a break...just when we feel like we have gotten a handle on one issue, yet another pops up.

I am worried about the surgery going well, I just feel so bad for him. The experience will be very difficult for him, painful and emotionally difficult - something he does NOT need more of.

Urrrgh!

Kathy, I am so sorry the boys can't catch a break.... I pray he comes out of this with speed and is back to normal quickly!!
I so understand that you get a grip on one thing and another pops up!! It is hard to keep up with but we keep moving forward!!!

Oh Kathy, you must be so scared for your sons. You're right, God doesn't give you more than you can handle. Unfortunately, it seems y'all can handle a lot.

Your family, and especially your son, will be in my prayers. Stay strong. Be kind to yourself. And let God handle the rest.

I have a son who hasn't seemed to catch a break. Less than 2 years old and he's had 4 major open heart surgeries and 5 heart caths. Yet he has caught a break, he's with me today and he smiles and he's happy.

I know major surgery is scary, especially the first time. What has helped me is my faith in God and my faith in my son's surgeon. I truly believe that if anyone can save my son's life, it's the combination of those 2.

I'd recommend (depending on your son's age) is talking to a child-life specialist at the hospital. There is a lot they can do to prepare a child beforehand so the surgery the day of is less frightening.

Also, before every procedure that my son has, I ask his anesthesiologist to give him some versed. It keeps him calm and he falls asleep (usually) very peacefully in my arms, or in the arms of his nurses. He has never gone back to surgery crying and afraid.

Another suggestion (if you don't already have one) is to consider setting up a carepage for him. It's really a nice way to update everyone all at once and not have to worry about calling/emailing 10 different people.

Poor sweety. These kids have been through so much in their short lives. May your family pull together the strength to face one more challenge. And may his surgery go well.
