Need To Think Quicker On My Feet!
Last evening when the girls were playing outside while I was preparing dinner, I looked out the window and saw Maria going down the slide with a ball in her shirt. Then she calls out to Flora...."Flora, go get that other ball and put it in your shirt and you can have a baby too!" Oh Lord, I thought....where is this coming from? So of course Flora gets the ball and the two of them are running around the backyard with balls in their shirts, talking about babies.
As they were on their way into the house, balls still in the shirts, I asked Maria what she had been doing in the backyard? She replied she was going down the slide with Flora and the baby in her belly. I told her that it's such a wonderful thing that babies are in Mama's bellies and then they are born and then they are in Mama's arms and able to play with sisters and be loved by everyone, like Mama, Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa. She said...yep, that is great! and moved on to asking what was for dinner. Darn...I feel like I missed a perfect opportunity to talk about her not being in my belly, but in her Birth Mothers belly. I know there will be another opportunity, but I really need to be able to think quicker on my feet! |

There will be plenty more opportunities, don't think of this one as a missed one, but an opportunity for a different conversation, you need to have those too.

Your Daughters will ask questions and you will get that opportunity again. My DD is 4 and there have been questions that opened up the conversations. Like ur girls she moves on to normal conversations quickly but I know she listens and she might ask another related question later.
I freak out a little about the questions that get asked.... but try not to let her see it. Then usually come to the forum friends to see what they thought of the question ( example... one question was "Where did u buy me?"). Forum friends assured me this was just her perspective and no-one had told her she was "bought". :-) which calmed me. But most of her inquires focus on an addition of a sibling to our family as she is only child :-) |
