I voted "no" for DD2 - she would drink a gallon a day if I let her, with no problems. DD1 doesn't drink that much milk to begin with (probably 16-20 oz/day), but as far as I can tell, she is not intolerant.

Lactose intolerance is much more uncommon in people w/origins from Europe, the Middle East, and India. Other areas of the world have a much higher rate of lactose intolerance...it's way more 'normal' than CCs think.

I could only vote once, but neither Lauren or Daniel are lactose intolerant so you can add a second 'no' if you want.

My Colombian son is. We figured that out shortly after he came home. His 2 biological sister are not.

Something is not quite right about the numbers. 75% and 33%?

lol....that is funny! i have no idea. edit to add....i tried to play with it, it remained off, so i am waiting for an answer. in the meantime, the actual numbers ARE correct, just not the percentages. edited to add again: sorry, it is my fault. i guess since i allow people to pick multiple options to account for multiple children it messes up the percentages. sorry. but the numbers should be right. ![]() Last edited by mommytoEli : 09-16-2009 at 09:54 AM. |

My son was very lactose intolerant as a baby, but he developed much more tolerance as he aged.
He can now have cow's milk and other dairy products so long as it's not excessive OR it's not in the evening on an empty stomach. Because we never know how much he will eat at supper we serve him water then instead of milk and are fine. The only thing he cannot tolerate at all is caramel -- even the small amount in a bite-sized candy bar such as a Milky Way or Snickers gives him diarrhea and more than that makes him vomit. I'm not sure why. Caramel does have 5x the lactose of milk, but he can handle far more milk than that. Lactose intolerance is far less common in white folks, but very common among many other people.

Both my guys love milk and are total Wisconsn "cheeseheads." Add a second "no" for my little one.

I am curious too about the prevalence in Guatemalan children. My daughter seems to tolerate milk just fine but she does not like it.
When we were preparing to adopt DS from Vietnam we were told that 97% of Southeast Asians experience lactose intolerance to some degree at some point in their lives. We were told to anticipate and expect our children to have a problem with milk. That percentage was astonishing to me until we traveled and I saw how very little milk products seem to be consumed by the average Vietnamese.

Have you asked her (and do you think she can give you an accurate answer) if milk makes her stomach feel upset? A mild intolerance may not be obvious to you, but it could account for why she doesn't like it.

that is interesting. i wouldn't have thought that. eli is SO intolerant of milk, i will be sure to keep him FAR away from caramel. it is so bad, that at 3 he could verbalize things like, "does that have milk in it, if so, i don't want it!" he still quizzes me to see if things i made have fake cheese or real cheese or no cheese. lol. he has to know before he even tastes one morsel. that's good. i love that i know he is looking out for himself and how he feels, even if i forget. you know milk makes a kid feel like crap, when you go out for ice cream and they say "i DON'T want ANY of THAT!" lol. |
