travel documents?

Do you carry any documents when you go on vacation? Just trying to think ahead, we won't be going out of the country, just out of state. Thought about taking birth certificates. Would or do you take them or anything else with you on a trip?

If you are flying and have a "lap baby" under two I would definitely take a birth certificate for proof of age. If you are driving or flying and you purchased a seat for everyone, and you are not crossing any borders, you don't really need any documents.

That said...the first few times I flew with my two, I took their passports "just in case". I never needed them and finally got more afraid of losing them so have left them at home ever since. My DDs are 4 and 7 and have been flying 2 or 3 times a year since they arrived home and have never needed ID for anything. But they are trained to clearly state their names or raise their hands and not be shy when the security officer at airport security asks them their name or calls them by name, as they always seem to do.

I am a single mom and have also never been questioned about their other parent either or about whether they belong with me. Now if I was leaving the country with them I would absolutely have not only their passports but some documentation showing that I was their sole parent.

i always carry her passport and a copy of her adoption/birth certificate - i also recommend scanning any documents you might need and attaching them to an online email account - that way if you docs are destroyed/stolen you have easy access to good copies
