A conversation with my wee one at breakfast 2 weeks ago:

E: "I'm building a bridge." (trying to balance spoon on bowl)

"I can't do it!"

Mom (demonstrating): "If you move the spoon so that just enough space is hanging over the other side, you can do it. If you grow up to be an engineer, you will be able to figure these things out for yourself."

E (wonderingly): "Are you an engine?"

Mom: "I didn't go to engineer school, but I can pretend to be an engineer."

E: "When I grow up, I want to be Percy." (You know, Thomas the Tank Engine's little green friend.)

Wee one balanced the spoon / bridge by herself this morning and reiterated: "I will be Percy when I grow up."

What do your kids want to be?

DS is too little to say what he wants to be when he grows up, but my 3 year old niece walked up to me one day and said, "Aunt Leenie, when I grow up I'm going to be a doctor and a clown. And a photographer, and one of those guys who works on the road. Oh, and in my spare time I'll be a teacher." It was very hard not to laugh! I guess she has a lot of ambitions.

That would depend on the day-

but the one I love the most is when he tells me that he is going to be a Popi with 3 little boys and when he has his babies, then I can hold them.

He likes to ask me if I will cry when I hold his babies and of course, I tell him yes.

He does not believe that I will be a Mamaw then- I guess I am going to Momma all my life. But that is OK with me.

DD has insisted since she was very little that she will be a firefighter which is hilarious to me since she hates (a) water (b) fire (c) loud noises (d) smoke and (e) driving fast. Eventually she added "and a mommy". Sometimes she adds "and a teacher" and recently she has been interested in owning a restaurant based on watching the owner/cook/waitress of the one-woman bistro we sometimes go to down the street.

Hmm...firefighter, teacher, short-order cook....sounds like "mommy" more or less covers it. She tells me she'll have 3 kids (2 girls, one boy, named Elle, Kay, and Jay) and a dog (named First) and they'll live in Colorado.

My kid hasn't voiced a preference yet. But based on his behavior, he's going to be a lawyer: He objects to everything and argues his point relentlessly.

I think I'm in trouble.

Here is our conversation with 4 1/2 year old.

DD- I'm going to be a veternarian.
Me- but you don't like dogs
DD-I don't like big dogs
Me- how are you going to be a veternarian if you don't like big dogs.
DD- I will put up a sign that says "no big dogs."

Later that week...
DD: or stinky animals like Flamingos and skunks and no sharks because they have big teeth. Actually...I will only take care of dry animals. But if Nana had a dog, I would take care of it no matter how big it is because I love Nana!

Career choices could be interesting with her!

My three year old son thinks he's going to become Spiderman at some point. He has started saying things like "when I'm spiderman I can shoot webs" and "when I'm spiderman, I'll get the bad guys."

Me: I don't think you can be spiderman. There's already a spiderman. Maybe you can be a policeman.

Him: No, when I'm a big guy, I'll be spiderman and shoot webs.

At least he wants to be a good guy and get the bad guys.

My little guy is three and he will tell you most days a NASCAR Priest. What can I say he loves going to mass and imitates both our priests and loves cars especially NASCAR.

My daughter insists that when she grows big, she will be the mommy and I will grow small and be her baby. She will drive me around while I ride in my car seat. Aww.

Spiderman is going to be a construction worker during the day (and drive a bulldozer) but at night he wants to be Spiderman and protect people. Except on weekends, when he is going to play soccer and drive me to IHOP so we can have pancakes and HE will pay because he will be a grownup with money.
