GUATEMALA CITY – A group of hired gunmen murdered a judge Monday on the south side of the Guatemalan capital, officials said.

Flor de Maria Aquino Ovalle, who presided over a labor court, was riddled with bullets in her car by the gunmen while she was stopped at a traffic light.

Angel Conte, security chief at the Supreme Court, told reporters that Aquino Ovalle had been the head of the labor court for three months and did not report any threats.

“We’re going to investigate this terrible incident. Right now we have no hypothesis about the motive of this crime,” Conte said.

Police said that the more than a dozen shell casings found inside the judge’s vehicle indicate the attackers were armed with automatic weapons.

Between January and July this year, 85 cases of threats and assaults against judges and prosecutors involved in high-profile cases have been reported. EFE
