do your kids care about or notice their tb vaccine scar?

just this week my 3.5 year old started caring about the little discolored pock mark on his arm. he tried to pick it off. lol. I explained to him it was the site of a shot he got in guatemala. and he was quite distraught to learn it would always be there for his whole life. anybody else's kids notice or care?

Bella notices hers, but typically only when she is noticing my vaccine scar on my arm...she then says that we both have the same scar. It doesn't bother her at all...she likes anything that she can find that is the 'same' about the two of us.

Both our kids have them and they are more noticable in the summer when they get a little color on their arms. They both know they have them and got them in Russia when they had their shots as a baby.

Funny you should bring that up Brooke, J.R. woke up screaming just last week saying the monster bit his arm and he has a missing chunck of his arm now showing me his pot mark. I had to explain it was a shot he had to receive in Guatemala. After the explaination he started looking all over his body asking if anything else was missing! I laughed for a good 10 minutes after that conversation...

No, but then I was proactive about explaining it to my son even before he asked about it. My reason for pointing it out to him was because I remember in the past when quite a few people here on this board would come back from visiting their children and be panicked because they thought their child was being abused by the foster family because they mistook the vaccine scar for a cigarette burn or a knife cut. I figured if potential adoptive hadn't educated themselves about it then other adults who care for my son might not know what it was. So I wanted him to be able to explain it to day care providers lest anyone ask him what it was (because they were trying to figure out if there was possible child abuse going on).

He knows it's from a shot and was given to him in Guatemala to help keep him healthy.

Kaya had a strange thing happen this week to her scar. She has a huge one and one place on it came to a head this week. My sister freaked she is a nurse practioner and she thought it was staph or msra, turns out it was nothing. Her scar looks better now, but it is huge on her little arm.

Elaina hasn't noticed hers yet. If she has she hasn't said anything to me about it.

hmmm..where is it usually located? I can't say that I've noticed it on Jorge, much less that he has.

Along the lines of Devora, we're mostly concerned with the sinister looking birthmarks down his back which look like the poor kid gets thrown down the stairs regularly. He wears a sunshirt when we're swimming anyhow, but DD knows what they are and so will DS when he's a bit older so he can ward off any similar concerns.

Those birthmarks are called "Mongolian Spots" they may fade as he ages.

Connor had these pretty bad on the lower part of his back and the tops of his hands. Our h/s worker made a note of it in our file, and she even had us take pics of them we we first got him home. She said she had one family (years ago) actually get accused of child abuse due to the mongolian spots and the daycare provider not knowing anything about those kinds of discolorations, etc. Anyway, Connor turned 5 two wks ago, and his are just about all gone. The tops of his hands faded first; and now only a slight discoloration is still on his back. But we still tell sitters/daycare providers if we ever change, what they are.

I had heard them called that; wasn't sure if there was a more PC term. They do seem to be fading a bit; I assumed it was just that they blended a bit more with his light tan.

We did the same for our pediatrician. They're on file and were confirmed at a second visit for no change in pattern so she can back us up if it ever came to some sort of misunderstanding.

Sorry, I didn't mean to pull the thread OT.

no worries....i like when we talk about things that effect our kiddos. eli has them too. i hate when dh carries eli on his (dh's) shoulders and it causes eli's shirt to ride up a bit in back....i'm always yelling at dh to reach back and pull eli's shirt down bc i just know that someday some well-intentioned person at target is going to call 911 and report me. eli's are dark and noticeable and go pretty far up his back. they are NOT pretty. i made sure to tell our church nursery about them...and they were so wanting to be helpful that now eli's name tag says " ELI- mongolian spots." lol. i hate to "label" him this way....but i wouldn't want a new worker or a parent passing by to call and report us for what really are mongolian spots.

Our son's is on his upper right arm -- at this point it's a small white spot with an indentation.
