so, i've considered myself fortunate that i've not had any weird inappropriate comments from the general public about being a white mom with a beautiful 3 year old guatemalan daughter.

today, i'm taking DDs bike to the bike shop to get it fixed. 30 something year old man helps us. sort of growls at me as i'm asking questions.

after fixing the bike he says, "where's she from". i gave my usual, "she was born in guatemala". then he says, "so what she doing here?". i stared at him and said, "what?". really not believing what i was hearing.

he asked me again. i said, "i don't understand" he then asked again, and i said "she's my daughter". i hurriedly left.

i tried to think of some cute comebacks like, "she's an exchange student". or maybe i should have said, "we're here to get her bike fixed." i mean really.

this is no adult. I would of gotten the name of the owner and called them and let them know how their employee treats people. Makes me wonder how he treats other of hispanic backgrounds.

Oh my word!!!!!! This would have set me off and when that happens it's not pretty. It's difficult to understand how someone could be so ignorant or just plain hurtful.

I think I would have said "humm, I don't know why we both are in this store, what's the owners name and is he here now?" It would have taken everything I had not to jump over the counter! Uggghhhhhh!!!!!

I agree. The owner needs to be notified. Having employees like this can seriously impact his/her business. The worst that can happen is that the owner tells you he knows about this employee's behavior, in which case you can tell him/her that not only will you not longer bring your business to that establishment, but you'll be asking all your friends to avoid them as well.
