I know that the main side effect is nausea ( after a while it is not so bad) it is usually taken with other diabetic medications such as metformin and there is a pretty good chance of weight loss as a side effect. I hope this helps.

If you have a blood sugar reading that is up and down. Byetta helps stabilize your blood sugars. Nausea is something that can occur when taking this medication. It is also known to help with weight loss. Most diabetics have a difficult time loosing weight. You have less chance of having low blood sugars when on this medication. My husband is on it now and his blood sugar readings are GREAT. I tried it twice but was so nauseated I had to quit taking it. It is a safe drug although fairly new medication. It is definitely worth a try. Good luck.

My dh and I both took byetta. I have Type 1 diabetes and my dh has Type 2. The nausea was really bad in the beginning, subsided later on, but there were times that it really hit us! I was on it for over a year and was able to lose weight. Since being off of it, I gained over 30lbs back! (UGH!) Dh didn't lose weight but didn't put any on either. Our doctor tells us there is a new form of Byetta coming out soon---waiting for FDA approval---supposedly will cause less of the stomach/nausea problems.

I am a certified diabetes educator. I have seen
Byetta be very successful for many people with little side effects. As stated above the most common side effect is nausea and weight loss. For most people with type 2 diabetes the weight loss is a plus. It does now carry a black box warning that it can cause pancreatitis. If you have any stomach pain you should stop using it immediately and call your doctor. The new type coming out is a once a week dose, I do not know when it will be available.
