Hair help for 3 yo dd needed!!!

Hi there!

Our daughter has beautiful naturally wavy mid back length hair but she just refuses to let us do anything with it! She is constantly pushing it out of her face and we talk about how putting some clips in would help but then when it comes time to do it she whines and cries. I have a great spritz so it's not tangled and we have a soft brush so that it doesn't hurt. I want to do some family photos soon and would love to put her hair up. She is absolutely fine at the salon but I don't want to have to pay every time I want to put her hair up so I'm looking for some strategies. Any suggestions on products, brushes, clips, etc and whatever you've got!! We used to put her hair up all the time and it's been maybe the last 8 or 9 months that she really has been resisting it so I'm hoping it might be a phase???

Thanks and have a Happy 4th!!!

Here's a dressy hairstyle that works for our dd, and it's one of my favorites. She has curly hair, but it will work with wavy hair too. I always style her hair wet--and the next day I just re-wet it if there is no bathtime to reactivate the gel. No clippies stay put unless there is a rubberband under it.

3 black coated rubber bands
several rubberbands with small multi-colored bows-
Hairgel-extra hold
I put 3 pony tails in a row down the center back of her hair in a line with the balck rubberbands She has no bangs so I comb it staight back.
Then I take a section from the bottom pony and link it to the pony tail above using a rubberband with a bow & I keep linking the hair from each section adding bow rubberbands Until it looks like a long hair up do. Sometimes I have to add another layer of rubberbands to the connected ones too & she ends up with 7 or eight rubberbands-but no-one can tell. Don't stop until you see it's as up as you like it. She usually needs four or five bow rubberbands.
For days that we aren't that dressy, we skip the bows and use regular black rubberbands for everything, and I tie two ribbons to the top pony, before I start linking sections together. Our dd can't just have 1 pony- it would be too poofy so she always has three, it looks cute & different and much much longer for some reason the three also, without the above work to put it all up.

I buy bows at blooming bows, and I also use ribbons to mix 2 colors and just tie like the pee-wee cheerleaders.

I don't know how to attach photos-but there are photos of her hair on our blog.

Oh my goodness Kathy, I checked out your blog and I LOVE it! That would be perfect.....now to figure out how to get her to sit still.....I'm truly not above bribery now and then so maybe ice cream or something like that will do it........I am going to try it though and I'll let you know how it goes, wish me luck!!!

I have my daughter sit on the end of my bed and she watches TV while I fix her hair. I use a spray bottle to wet it down and I put pony-tail and bows in everyday. Somdays she just wants a headband. Good Luck!!

DD goes through phases. If I can talk her into it letting me pull it up, I nudge grandma and such to comment that they love being able to see her pretty eyes/face and that her hair looks so nice. That helps.

Sometimes I just make it a choice that isn't really a choice: do you want one ponytail or two? Do you want a red bow or a white bow?

And whenever possible I ask "do you want to do your hair today or leave it down?" That way when I can't give her a choice I can say "I know, but you've had it down for a few days so now it's an "up" day."

The most consistent easy hairstyle for her is to just split the hair down the center and pull it to a low braid right behind her ear--one on each side and no ponytail at the top, just at the end. She likes Cinderella and has seen the opening scene where that's how Cinderella wears her hair at bedtime so that's an easy sell.

I keep a little basket of things Emma likes to play with on the counter. She only gets to play with them during hair time so she's more than willing to sit on our hair stool. Stickers, pretend makeup, a couple Little Pets. Works for us!

When I want to spend extra time on Avea's hair, I do it while she is eating, strapped in the high chair. Just a thought. I hope it works forever!!

Thanks Kathy!--It seems like more work than it is. I too used to bribe dd to do her hair.
We now do it in the morning when a favorite show is on, and she is eating a breakfast bar.
It has become a routine, thank goodness-because there is no way she can wear her hair all the way down, it is beautiful but very, very large, even with gel in it.
Have fun & I'm looking forward to hearing how you did your dd's hair. I am always looking for new hairstyles too!
