OT: cloth potty training pants

While we haven't starting "training" in earnest, 2 y.o. DD is showing interest in the potty. We've had some successes but it's really hit-or-miss. The Pull-Ups are just too absorbent and she's filling them like a diaper, which doesn't bother her at all.

Looking for advice/suggestions on maybe using cloth trainers (with a waterproof cover) so she can feel it more.

TIA, Candice

I found some great waterproof cloth training pants online. The brand name was Imse Vimse (Itsy Bitsy in some foreign language). They are cloth on the outside as well as the inside, with a waterproof layer in-between. Most of the Websites I shopped at had a very limited supply, so I hope they haven't been discontinued. They generally "hold" one pee.

Patty Potty has some trainers with plastic covers, but this product wasn't a favorite with me. You might also try rubber pants (used for cloth diapers) worn over regular cloth training pants. I didn't try this, but I understand some folks do.

I liked the idea of waterproof training pants, but it does take a little longer to train that way. The quickest way is to let them pee down their leg so you can catch them in the act most times. But the waterproof ones were good for times when pee puddles were not a reasonable option.

DD just started potty training at daycare. They don't allow Pull-Ups except at nap because they are too absorbant. For some reason, they don't allow the training pants with plastic attached. They use training pants with separate plastic pants. Here's a link:

ClothDiaper.Com Shopping Cart

We use the Gerber Training Pants and Gerber Plastic Pants. It's going well so far. It also works if you can let them run around naked at home. DD NEVER has an accident when she is naked. She'll even nap naked for 2 hours without an accident.

Another option is to look at swimming diapers. They're designed to not be too absorbant but to contain major accidents. If you're looking for cloth options, there are many very cute cloth swim diapers at most stores. They're a thing terry cloth inside and an oil cloth outside. Not sure how water proof they are for containing accidents.

I bought some at Target- but they were too big in the legs for Bug and stuff just slid right on out- quite messy.

We ended up using pullups that are the ones that allow the child to feel the wetness. they worked great during the day, but we still had some accidents.

Really what worked the best was going to the bathroom every 20-30 minutes and sitting on the potty. I would go too and the example helped Bug learn.

Love to you,
Deb

I got the target ones too. They leaked some for us as well but not too much. The only problem I had was that I melted the plastic on one pair when I forgot to turn the dryer down to low. They've shrunk just a little now and don't leak anymore although Ruby only wears them at night now.

Put a pair of regular undies on and then put a regular diaper over top. There's no leaking, but they still feel wet and they usually don't like it. Good Luck

i like the idea of undies under a pull up.
but another thought is that maybe she's interested but not ready?
when julian was hit or miss we encouraged him by bringing him to the potty often and asking if he wanted to use the potty but we waited to put him in undies full time until he was much more hit than miss.
i know it's not a popular approach but it worked great for us.

Thanks for the great ideas, everyone! It's nice to have different options with the hope that one will actually work eventually!!

Samantha (guatparents2be), it's funny you mention the readiness factor. I've actually noticed DD seems less interested lately with many more misses than hits. We were on a better roll a few weeks back and I was now afraid I'd missed the boat, so I wanted to try a more full-throttle approach with the cotton undies, stickers, charts, etc. It was a TOTAL bust! We plowed thru several outfits within an hour and the wet undies were barely noteworthy to her. The chart was ripped off the wall and the stickers weren't that interesting. I realized I was getting very frustrated and opted to back off knowing the frustration would only hinder her progress. Apparently, we BOTH need to be ready!!
