I should add my little princess is totally Mayan! Both of her parents are of Mayan families and still even wear the traje. I also met the grandparents etc. and they are too!! She is dark skinned, straight hair, VERY dark eyes which are listed as black and the ped said they are indeed black in color, and I find her arms/legs are skinny with the mid-drift being barrel shaped! She's absolutely perfect in every way!

Well I don't know a lot of the characteristics but my son does have the one syllable surnames, straight jet black hair, very dark eyes and was born in Chinautla. I will try to attach a photo but I personally think he is Mayan and not hispanic. We have been asked several times though by Asian if he is Chinese!!!

I haven't tried again. But was curious if you use something in her hair b4 u curl?

I'll let Mindy answer for herself as to what she is currently using, but Mindy recommended Suave #7 hairspray to me a long time ago, and it is awesome! As straight as my DD's hair is, I have sponge curlered it for weddings and such and sprayed each piece with that spray beforehand, and it has held all day. Its great because it doesn't create a residue that's noticeable on her black hair which is the problem with every product I tried before it.

Most people in Guatemala are either of mixed or Mayan heritage. Like any other mixed ancestry, some kids take on traits closely resembling one part of their background or another. Even most of the lighter skinned kids likely have at least a small percentage of Mayan blood. Only a very tiny percentage of the population has 100% European blood.

Very dark hair, very dark eyes and darker skin tone generally are Mayan traits, while Spanish ancestry is more likely to have curly hair and fairly light skin. Mayan people also tend to be shorter than Spanish, but not always. They tend to have broader breast bones, and the men do not have facial hair

Names can also be a giveaway, but by no means all the time. A Mayan name will obviously mean Mayan roots, but a large segment of the Mayan population has lost some elements of their heritage - and many have ended up with Spanish names.

Our Carmen has deep black eyes, strait black hair, almond eyes, and a broad nose. Her skin is fairly dark, but not as dark as some Mayan people I've seen. Interstingly, her first mom has darker skin, but slightly curly hair.

Blessings,
-Greg

Well I think I am as clueless as ever about what Susanna's features might indicate, but I certainly thank you all for sharing your insights and gorgeous pictures of your kids!! <3

Piper,
I like these threads and find them interesting.
I don't think it is possible to really determine your child's background by simply looking at them. My family is Spanish & Mexican and we all look different. Some VERY light, some VERY dark. I also have some family in Guatemala and they are not Mayan and not Spanish. My point is, unless you really know the Birth mother & Birth father, not just what the report is, I don't think you can tell 100% and you really are just guessing. I have rarely had anyone know my background by simply looking at me, and they are usually not even close.
By the way your daughter is gorgeous

Yup! This is what I still use:-) Mikayla has her own bottle and I use this same hairspray too. I only buy the pump kind too. I love this stuff. I am picky about hair products and tried various ones until I found this one and have been using it now for years. I spray each piece before I put the iron on it and I start at the root and twist it around the iron once and then hold for a few seconds, then a little more and hold it for a few second, and I just keep twisting the hair up in the iron until all the hair is curled around it. Then I spray it while it's still on the curling iron and then let it go. It will hold almost all day for her. And her hair is very healthy. I hope that description made sense! ROFL

Talking

When we took a tour of Tikal our tour guide spent the hour ride to the park telling us about Maya culture and various other things about Guatemala! He spent a lot of time educating us about the Maya. One thing he told us was Maya physical features- round face, high cheek bones, wide set almond shaped eyes, flat nose, to name a few. These features are also common with native American cultures and other cultures like Chinese & Mongolian. Of course, with intermarriages these features may be more or less prominent.

DH needs the computer ASAP! I'll post pics of my angel later!!!!!

The first pic is from our update at 4 months of age.
I had a really hard time choosing her bitty baby for her 3rd birthday- which is coincidently tomorrow- the 4th of July! I went with the Asian doll becasue it resembled her more. I had a conversation with an asian security guard in Houston airport during our layover while traveling home. At one point she said that it was unusual for Asian babies to be so big! I had to chuckle because Jess was not exactly petite! I said that she wasn't asian but Guatemalan.

Greg,

Carmen is so gorgeous and has a lot of the same features as Eva except E has curly hair.
E's eyes are almost black, almond shaped, big full cheeks and a fairly broad nose. Her skin turns a gorgeous copper brown in the sun. I've always thought she probably has both Maya and Spanish roots.

My two dd's, both adopted from Guatemala, look totally different.

Lucy is tall for her age, thin, very long limbs, curly hair (coarse at times), light complected, light brown eyes. I guess that she is more Hispanic but I know very little about her birth parents (sadly). My dh is Italian with curly black hair & they are often told that they look alike.

Veronica is tiny (turning 3 but still wearing size 18 mos clothes), quite dark skin, very dark eyes (black in color), straight black silky hair. I guess that she is more Mayan but I don't know.

They are both so beautiful but they are most beautiful at this very moment because they are taking a NAP!!!

Peace,
Amy

ps: To the OP-- your daughter is just beautiful!

Ok... Figure this one...

First off - I have Biological Sister and brother.

Sister - Black, not dark dark brown, but BLACK wavey hair. Dark Dark Dark Brown Eyes, almost looking black and very round, VERY VERY Light skinned, Flat bridge nose , and very petite. 3 years old, and just started wearing 2 T because the 24 months are starting to get to short....

Brother - Black, not dark dark brown, but BLACK curley hair. Dark Dark Dark Brown Eyes, almost looking black and ALMOND SHAPE, VERY VERY Light skinned, Flat bridge nose , and Big Boy - Not fat, just solid. 2 years old, and just started wearing 24 months.

Height and weight between them are 2 lbs, and 4 Inches.

Theie Birthmother only had 1 last name, as did the birthmothers mother.( I have a copy of all Birthcertificates)

So, what are they? LOL... Only think we know is that it was the same birthfather, and we found that out on pickup.
