OT: Is he ready?

DS will be 2 soon and I am wondering if he is ready to be potty trained or if it is my wishful thinking. He will sit on the toilet and go every single time if we put him on it, both #1 and #2. He knows when he does it and how to do it. He goes #2 A LOT in his diaper too. Candy is rare for him to get but he gets it after he goes in the toilet which he is always so happy about. He doesn't like to sit on the toilet but he doesn't cry. He doesn't voluntarily tell us he has to go but he knows when he goes in his diaper, #2 anyway. He will come over and pat his bum. He also hides when he goes. He almost always goes when he is in his crib and if not, he will go into another room and do it. This is all new to me because DD came to me all on her own and pretty much trained herself and was very interested in the toilet. She was younger than he was and I know all kids progress at their own rate, particularly boys so this feels new to me.

Personally I would take these as good signs that he is physically able or nearly able; I'd give it a try, starting slow so you can easily back off if he rebels a lot.

Red face

It sure sounds like he is ready. My oldest DD started potty training when she was 2. She caught on quickly.

I started with my youngest when she was 3 - she is 3 1/2 now and still has TONS of accidents. She never tells me if she has to go and hates sitting on the potty.

How about a sticker reward chart in the bathroom? Maybe he would enjoy choosing some new underwear as incentive as well.

Good luck!

My DD started about the same time, but I didn't really follow up until around two and a half - then she decided she was ready and gave her diapers to a baby in a week. Only encouragement I gave at that time was a ride on the carosel at the local mall (which she rode all the time anyway - but she would go on the potty, then tell me she gets to ride the carosel!)

good luck.

Hey Heidi,

The only thing I can say is that my nephew was VERY hard to potty train. His sister was very easy just like Emmi but when it came time to train him my sister tried at 2 just like with her daughter and he was VERY resistent. He used to hide as well and it ended up being a long drawn out thing. I think sometimes it is best just to wait. If they are ready they are ready. Just keep on encouraging him but that is all you can really do. I've always heard that boys mostly train at age 3.
I'm with you though, I so want Eva to be potty trained right now!
