OT: Looking for DSLR camera recommendations

I'm considering getting a digital SLR camera. Right now I just have a little point and shoot. I'm a total amateur, although I did take some photography classes back in the days of film.

I'd love to hear some recommendations of what to get or not get and why.

Thanks!

Nikon D60. I absolutely love it!
I have an associates in Photography but have not shot in ages. I had a small digital camera when we first started our adoption process. It took great pictures if you were quick. I couldn't stand shutter lag. The other disadvantage for me was every time my son saw that I had the camera he would follow me or move from what he was doing. With the Nikon D60 I was able to use a long distance lens where I can be across the room and zoom in on him without his knowledge. My pictures of him have been incredible with this new camera. No experience needed, it is fully automatic, point shoot, and lens will focus on subject with a simple press of the shutter. Virtually no shutter lag. It is so simple to use. My husband, who almost never takes a good pic has no trouble with this camera.
The only disadvantage is it's size. But,now that I have shot with this, I wouldn't go back, not even for size.

I have the Canon Rebel Xsi and I also love it. I haven't started adding a ton of accessories yet but I have been so happy with the pics I get just as is. The lack of shutter lag is amazing. I have always had Canons so that was what I was familiar with, so that was a main reason for going with the Canon Rebel, but I love, love love it. And like the others, even though I keep my Elph in my purse, I prefer the huge DSLR!

Funny you should post this today - I just bought the Nikon D40 today. I am a complete novice but want to take pictures like a big girl. I was trying to choose between the Canon Rebel and the Nikon and finally decided on the Nikon (even tho I have always owned Canons). I can't wait until it gets here. The reviews on Amazon were really helpful in me deciding as was the advice from photographer friends that use both Canon and Nikon. Their advice was basically down to personal choice as both cameras were pretty much on a par (the differences really wouldn't bother someone at my level just yet). I did go into a store and hold both and explore. The Nikon just felt better in my hands. Good luck. How exciting!!

I have a Canon xti and I love it. I really think that either the Canon or Nikon are the two I would choose from. I researched both and they are good to begin with.

Love my Canon XTi. I still don't know how to use anything but the basic functions, but plan on taking a photography class this fall. Not having to deal with shutter lag is awesome.
