Speech Question / No talking/babbling at 22 months
Hey everyone!
I wanted to ask a question about speech and your Guat Tots. Cole is 22 months tomorrow and not a word yet. Babbles here and there. He's in speech therapy, and can make M, B and P sounds, and makes a sound that sounds like "yaaay" when he claps his hands or is excited, but still no words. Anyone else out there who has / had kids who did not talk as of this age? Thanks!

I wanted to take the time and respond. My son came home at 15 mos. He didn't say not one word not even babbling till about 2 weeks ago. He is now 2 years and 7 mos old soon to be 8 mos this week. He said dad first and I was trilled with a word but in about 2 days after that he said mom help me (he wanted help turning on the tv.) I thought I was hearing things or there was a ghost in the house. I had no idea it was him after all I didn't know what his voice was gonna sound like. We have had speech therapy since the day he came home. I was getting discouraged and even the doctor suggest austism or mental retardation. I was so scared, angry and ever emotion you can imagine. It was so worth the wait for these words. In the last two weeks, his voc. has expanded to about 15 words and more every day and more clearly. His baby teacher said he is extremely smart and was getting his needs meet w/o talking. Please don't get discouraged. Try signing with him, it helped us. More is a great sign to start with. Please pm me anytime. I remember how it felt when everyone would say it will happen but it never did. Hugs to you and I can't wait till you post and he says mom.Tonight he said mom, i you. he can't master the love word yet but I know what he means. It's so special.

My younger daughter is another who talked very little but was smart enough to communicate her wants without talking. She was never completely nonverbal, but her speech was way behind her receptive vocabulary, etc. The only thing that kept me from getting her tested was the nonverbal evidence I saw that she is very intelligent. One day (about 24 mos) she decided that she had more to say so she started using a range of vocabulary that continues to surprise me every day.
I've known boys who went from making two sounds to speaking in complete sentences almost overnight, around the age of 2-2.5. What does his speech teacher say about his other language skills?

Henry had just a handful of small words for a looooong time, but seemingly overnight, he's now speaking in sentences at 26 months. Each day he tries a new word, so just hang in there and expose him to lots of things. I'm sure he'll be talking up a storm before you know it.
Have you tested his hearing? |

We had SKL's statement of "overnight talking". My youngest had just turned 2 when we brought him home. Didn't say anything really...just kind of responded with some babbling. We knew he understood us, but he just didn't talk.
Around 28 months I gave him some green beans at dinner and he said "No, I don't like those". Boom! Unfortunately he had the worst luck with ear infections/tubes at ages 2 & 3, so that did affect his vocabulary learning. He's now 8 and in the 3rd grade and is doing just fine with his speech and vocabulary. ![]()
