I do not have the girl charts in front of me- but you can pull them from the CDC website- but using the boy charts, you DD is right on the 25th percentile line for both height and weight. If this is how she ahs trended all along, then I would abolutely ignore the doctor.
My son trends between the 3rd and 50th percentile- and he is still on whole milk at 3.75 years old. he will be on whole milk as long I can keep him on it. He drinks 16 oz a day- if that, I drink 16oz a day (whihc is more thna i Have drunk in 15 years). Whole milk is not the end all be all evil thing that some people think it is.
Sounds like you are on the right track for looking for a new doctor.

Doctors seem to have a very broad range of beliefs when it comes to weight. I think your comfort level is the important thing here.

I switched my younger daughter to 2% well before age 2 because she has always drunk a lot of milk and tends to gain weight (relative to height) very easily. Switched to 0% around age 2. She is perfectly fine and very intelligent. I am comfortable with this change based on what I know about my child. But, if a doctor gave me this advice after just looking at her for a few minutes, I would balk too.

Based on my recall of the charts I found online (when I was concerned about my DD), the numbers you report for your little one sound like they may be on the heavy side of average, but not "way out there." You might want to do a search and see what the norms are, just to get a feel for where she is on those charts.

Do what you feel is right with your daughter, and good luck finding a doctor with whom you are comfortable.

Well, I think it also depends on the other part of your child's diet. Sometimes the kids 'fill up' on milk alone and you don't get all your nutrients from milk. DS was switched to 2% at 20 months (he is on the chunky but perfect size!) - now at 3 years he is on 1% as am I. It sounds like it really is not about the milk % - more about the need to find a new ped. Good luck with that - it is so important to feel your ped is part of your team! My ped is not 'worried' about DS's weight/ height ratio but so many kids grow up obese in this country (and now, thanks to our lovely American diet ... obese in many parts of the world) that peds have a responsibility to suggest a lower calory diet if they think the growth curves are a little out of line. Just my opinion. Go find yourself and your little one a new ped.

I checked the girl charts on the CDC website. at 19 months at 31.5 inches and 24 lbs- your daughter is right on the 50th percentile line. So if this is her normal trend forher height and weight, then I would not be concerned. but if previously she had trended on a lower percentile and this represents a spike, then i can see where the doctor might be concerned.

Anyway- I still think you are right to be considering another doctor. It is important to be able to have a good rapport with your ped and it sounds as if this is not the case for you.

Love and hugs,

As a mom and a ped, I fully agree that you should find a doctor you feel more comfortable with.

But, just FYI, you can no longer get the individual M, M, and R shots unless you already have them stockpiled in your fridge somewhere. Merck stopped making them last year.

Thanks for answering my previous question relati... - JustAnswer

Please don't let it bother you.... Go have Ice Cream with your daughter!!

I am giggling a little as my best friend's little boy who I watch once a week will be 1 yrs old in a couple of weeks and is already 23 pounds. My DD was your daughter's weight at 19 months (but shorter) and was that weight for almost a year - untill she turned 2.5 yrs old. Your daughter is fine. I think it is a good idea that you are looking for a new doctor. You are responsible for your daughter's well being - doctors are suppose to support you and work with you. Good for you!

whether it is wrong or right, if you don't feel comfortable, look for a new doctor. i LOVE my doctor except for 2 things. for NOW, they are 2 things i can live with, but if for some reason i could not, i'd switch too.

Hi Alex,

Our daughters are 4 days apart in age. I recently took her for her 18 mo well-baby checkup. She was 24 pounds and 33 inches. My doc said she is happy with my daughter's stats. However she mentioned that for the first time in about 50 years the AAP now recommends that toddlers drink skim milk rather than whole milk. I told her that I don't even drink skim milk. Then she said that my daughter appears active enough to be okay with 2%. I tried to look this up online but have not found anything yet.

It seems like a good idea to find a doctor that you are comfortable with. Good Luck!

~Eva

P.S. It also looks like we brought our daughters home within 10 days of each other!

I heard this recently on the news. The way I recall it, they were saying that the trends toward obesity in this country are more concerning than the possible detriment of missing milk fat in the diet. They did not say milk fat wasn't beneficial.

I was glad to hear that they stopped insisting that ALL children under age 2 MUST be on whole milk only. On the other hand, I'm sure whole milk is beneficial for many children that age. Such a decision should be made on a case by case basis.

If your not comfortable with your Dr. find a new one. I had to do that a few times until I was comfortable. It's a pain looking, but it is worth it

What?! That sounds about what Eva weighed at 19 months and I think she was actually in the low range for weight. Her dr. recomended whole milk until the age of two. Some dr.'s are just confusing. I'm sure if you look it up the American Academy of Pediatrics recomends whole milk until 2 years old for brain development.

Sorry I read this after my comment. I agree with SKL it should be a case by case basis. Yes, childhood obesity is a problem...okay a big problem here in the U.S. But if you are commited to feeding your child a healthy diet and have an active lifestyle then why not continue with the whole milk until age 2? It seems like they are focusing on the wrong part of the equation here.

Sheez! My son weighed 25lbs at 12 months! He is now 2 and weighs 32lbs, which places him in the 95%. He is by no means fat and our ped wanted him on whole milk until 2 years old. Every child is different, but it sounds like your daughter's weight is just fine! Trust your mommy gut and find a new doctor who you trust. Best wishes to you!
